The box containing the opinions on combo pants has just been opened.  I'll begin.

Go with a pair of plate pants and a pair of base pants.  The combo pants do not look good at all.  Personally, I use and like Smitty and think they wear well and look good.

I agree, perhaps I might just wait and buy both. But that means paying for 2 pants instead of one.  I personally, love the Smitty's too!!

I got a pair of base pants for $25 at a clinic over the winter. I'm not sure if they were $25 because they were 'irregular' or because that's the regular price... but they're garbage. Wouldn't recommend to anyone. Buy Smitty's.

Spend the money on Honigs poly wools.  One for the plate and one for the bases.  You will be glad you spent the extra money.  It also says only dry clean, but I wash mine on cold, hang dry and iron them myself.  I don't know the quality of your iron, but I highly recommend Rowenta in the ironing department.

I recently bought a pair of Champro base pants.  They were about $22 dollars and another $7-8 for shipping.  I've only worn them about 3 times so I can't comment on how they will hold up over time.

What I can say is there is an obvious quality difference between the Smitty pants I have and these.  The fabric is thinner, the expandable waste band is not as substantial, and the zipper and zipper handle seem to be of low quality.

I've had the Smitty pants for several years and they've held up wonderfully.  Obviously the Smitty pants should be better since they cost twice as much, but I suspect at the end of the day they will have a useful life FAR greater than 2x that of the Champro.

I'm not disappointed in the Champro pants in the least because the quality is about what I expected, but I won't buy them again.  Assuming (I know, maybe a mistake) the combo pants are of the same quality as the base pants I bought, I think your money would be much better spent buying higher quality pants.

Here is my progression of pants, from when I started out:

Goodwill pants  (honestly, that was a good move. I didn't know if I really wanted to umpire)

Sears gray slacks.

Levi Action slacks

Fechhiemer heather gray combos

+POS heather combo

+POS plate and base

Gerry Davis combos

Gerry Davis plate and base pants

Honig's polywools. Plate and base. 4-5" hem on each, to help keep from snagging, and increase resale value (if they're too short, you narrow your market)

See all the money I wasted. Not only that, I could never recover much cash on the resale market for those lesser pants. Lose-lose.  And this holds true for all the other gear and clothes I bought along the way. BUY PRO GEAR, and skip wasting your dough. It works, and protects better, you look better, and you can resell it for a better price down the road.

I wish I read something like this when I started out.

Amen to @KenBAZ's amen.  If you know that you will continue to umpire then buy good gear. You won't ever regret it.

I just wish I was rich and good looking and lived in SoCal like @Magic so I could buy a new pair of plate and base Honig's Poly-wools every year. Hahaha.

Thanks everybody for your input.  I'm definitely not going the cheap route on this after all . I thought I've learned my lesson when buying cheap, I sometimes pay twice as much because I have to buy again. You get what you pay for. That being said I'm going with the Smitty's poly/wool because, I have always been a fan of all of their stuff. Honig's not so much. Thanks all  going with the one's below. I wish they had expanded waist but ...,.
