It's refreshing to know effing something up happens at the highest levels, too.  This was a confusing, confusing mechanic and ruling on the field.  And clearly, the wrong call in my opinion.  I mean, when Jerry Remy says he doesn't know why a Red Sox runner is still standing on the base, something is wrong in Mudville.  Part of me wishes umpires had to do like football refs and explain the ruling to the crowd.  A very small part of me.

I'm very confuzzled about this one. What was all that signalling for, just to call him safe?

I think he's signaling he pushed him off.

This. ^^^^^^^^^^

I'm confused by the confusion. looked straightforward to me. Fielder pushed him off the bag. Safe.

Yeah, they should have taken a look at that. His momentum took him past the bag, and the tag separated him from the base. He was out.

We've discussed the Gant/Hrbek play a few times lately, and this is nowhere near the force Hrbek used. This is an out, all codes.

siz and Rich have the ruling.

Without looking at the BRD or WUM, I believe the proper mechanic for a "fielder forced him off the bag" play is to call "Time" and instruct the runner/fielder he is safe for said reason.

As for the call itself, I am unsure.  But at the same time - is this really something to get tossed over?  I think Tichenor handled the situation the best he could after the call/mechanic was made.
