Kid Slides into a Base Puts Hand Up?

A player goes into a base and lets say into 3rd. He slides into 3rd and puts his hand up to call time (to get up), but I haven't given him time yet, the throw comes in late and goes past the base, can the player advance? 

Does it kill the play when that player calls time? Can he advance anymore after putting his hand up to call time?

Only an umpire can call time. Until that happens, play on.

If an Umpire does not declare "TIME", there is no time.  Players & Coaches REQUEST time.......we grant it, or not..    Play.

It's routinely granted in the pros.

If they're still throwing it around, then to me, the initial play is going on and I'm not granting time. Once it's all done and play is pretty much relaxed, sure.

Where I see this most is when the player goes back head first and the player just stands there holding the glove on them.  Sometimes it is quicker to call time and get them up then to not grant it and wait for base runner to walk it up or fielder to stop holding the tag.  It must be requested by the player though.  One time I had a coach tell his kid to request time when the kid was holding the tag.  The only problem was the kid raised the only hand that was on the bag.  Sorry out son.

Yup, or even retroactively, as sometimes happens in basketball.

That out is too cheap for me, and likely to cause more trouble than it's worth.

I need to clarify I only found out the coach told him after.  R1 and R3 I was in B he said it and it was a windy day so I never heard it then kid put up hand.  It was only later that my partner said he heard the coach tell him to call time.  I would have granted the coach if I would have heard it.  Surprisingly the coach didn't say a word.

I also tell the kids to climb up and I tell the the fielder to throw it in. Unless he took a face full of dirt or something like that, I don't like to call time. Fielder needs to learn how to throw the ball to the pitcher. So many times, the fielder makes a bad throw, ball is live and runners may try to advance - but they can't if we call time. That's part of the game.

Does that mean it kills the play when the player calls time? Or would I have to grant time for the player, but if I granted time and the ball passes then it kills it all right?

No, a kid putting his hand up does NOT kill the play. IF, you chose to grant time, wait until action has stopped (relaxed). I suggest only granting time if you see they are hurt or taken a mouth of dirt or some such thing. If you tell them "No, walk it up" the coach will convey that to the rest of the team and you won't have to deal with it the rest of the game.

In general terms,... a player putting his hand up means nothing.......he can not call time, he can request it from you, and you may grant it......or not....in general terms do not grant time until all playing action is relaxed...........once you grant time, its a bell you cant un-ring.....
