JV game, Top 7th, 2 out and no runners on.  VTHC wants to re-enter a starter, no problem.  He tells me 12 is in for 15.  I just make a quick note on the back of the card in order to keep the game moving and don't look at the actual lineup.  The count is 1 ball and 2 strikes when the HTHC comes out and points out that 15 was in the 9 hole and 12 was originally in the 1 spot.  I put 15 in the box with the same count and one pitch later that's ball game with a swinging strike 3.  HT wins 3-2.

Couple of things:

 

1.  I know many guys just note the change without looking at the lineup card, but I think it's a bad practice.  I record the changes on the card itself to ensure the change is legal.  I have a feeling you will be doing the same from now on.  I don't care if it takes a few more seconds.

 

2.  12 was an illegal substitute and should have been called out and restricted to the bench (though the game was over anyway, so that part is irrelevant.  The penalty for illegal substitute supersedes the penalty for BOO.

Seriously: although it is a coach's responsibility to substitute legally, I'm NEVER, EVER going to accept a sub I know is illegal and then call him out for it. Major game management faux pas.

I agree 100% - this should never happen.  However, in the OP, once it's happened and detected, you have to call the illegal substitute out.

I'm confused about the re-entry substitution and your solution to the problem. It is not clear which position in the batting order was due up. If the re-entry substitution was legal (not clear if if was), you shouldn't have re-inserted 15 back into the line-up. It would only be a BOO, and the proper batter (not clear who) should have assumed the count.

It doesn't matter who was due up.  If 12 was batting #1m and 15 was batting #9, then "12 for 15" is an illegal sub no matter how you slice it.

I used to do it on the lineup card then I was told I was taking too long so went to just making a quick note and then fix it later.  I have since gone back to my old slow way of doing it, the game will get started when I'm good and ready.

It should take (almost) no longer to make the note on the lineup card as it does to note it on the back.

The consequences for short cutting this process far outweighs the time it takes.
