Judgment aside, the troubling aspect of these situations for us (and they always filter down to us) is the impression that these players and coaches give that the PU CANNOT make this call, that the call properly belongs to or should be made by the base umpire.

 

As an umpire who generally gets his own check swing strikes (I'm rarely asked to appeal, as I've already ruled it a swinging strike), I find this attitude annoying.
