I know in FED that rule 8-3-3 d.  states that each base runner is awarded one base from TOP on a pitched ball lodged in a fence or backstop.

Is there a corresponding rule in OBR?  I can't find it.  If not, how would you rule on a lodged ball (pitched ball) in OBR?

7.05 (h) One base, if a ball, pitched to the batter, or thrown by the pitcher from his position
on the pitcher’s plate to a base to catch a runner, goes into a stand or a bench, or
over or through a field fence or backstop. The ball is dead;
APPROVED RULING: When a wild pitch or passed ball goes through or by the
catcher, or deflects off the catcher, and goes directly into the dugout, stands, above
the break, or any area where the ball is dead, the awarding of bases shall be one
base. One base shall also be awarded if the pitcher while in contact with the rubber,
throws to a base, and the throw goes directly into the stands or into any area where
the ball is dead.

@VAUmp - a lodged ball has entered any area that is dead by definition. Not because of the area, but because it's lodged.

Nothing in the rules covering this specific action either. Base awards are still the same.

5.09 The ball becomes dead and runners advance one base, or return to their bases, without
liability to be put out, when—

(g) A pitched ball lodges in the umpire’s or catcher’s mask or paraphernalia, and
remains out of play, runners advance one base;
Rule 5.09(g) Comment: If a foul tip hits the umpire and is caught by a fielder on the
rebound, the ball is “dead†and the batsman cannot be called out. The same shall apply where such
foul tip lodges in the umpire’s mask or other paraphernalia.

If a third strike (not a foul tip) passes the catcher and hits an umpire, the ball is in play. If such
ball rebounds and is caught by a fielder before it touches the ground, the batsman is not out on such a
catch, but the ball remains in play and the batsman may be retired at first base, or touched with the ball
for the out.
If a pitched ball lodges in the umpire’s or catcher’s mask or paraphernalia, and remains out of
play, on the third strike or fourth ball, then the batter is entitled to first base and all runners advance
one base. If the count on the batter is less than three balls, runners advance one base.

BUT

That video is a foul ball so it doesn't apply.

I think I sometimes confuse lodged and playable.

My question...imagine the backstop is made up of those large sections of padding that are usually seen in high school basketball gyms.

I have seen a ball get "lodged" in between these pads before.  Now, obviously, the ball is very playable, players could go and grab it.

My question - do you kill the ball as soon as it gets lodged?  Is this a ground rule?

Thanks

'Lodged' is defined as 'firmly fixed or embedded in a particular place'

If the ball is not able to move freely, it has become lodged.

I know for FED, there is a temporary exception for a ball lodged in a fielder's glove (FED can't throw glove with ball lodged in it; however, the player is given the opportunity to remove lodged ball from glove.

Ball in between backstop pads is lodged. Kill it and award as required by the situation.

If the PU was in the slot and not over the F2 opposite shoulder, this wouldn't have happened.

Do you really expect the rulebook to mention EVERY place a ball could lodge? Pants pocket? Shirt pocket? Ball bag? Down a shirt? Chest protector? How about some good old fashioned "common sense"? I guess its not so "common" any more.

exactly my point. The op was concerned that the word backstop wasn't specifically mentioned.

The "penalty" is the same, and this is covered in the rules.
