Junior Umpire Evaluation

I caught some of my Junior umps working a Majors game last night. Recorded them for a little for your evaluation.

 

A little background: My PU on this game is a friend, we've known each other for a couple years. He was supposed to work a Coach Pitch game on the bases last night, but I got a call that the PU scheduled on this game didn't have shin guards (even after he told me specifically that he spent $135 on all his gear, but I digress)... I had no choice but to switch them, so this PU was on this game for the first game of his career... THEN, the teams were switched to the two most vocal coaches in the league... THEN, I got a call that the local TV station would be broadcasting this game!!

 

All of this for his first game ever.

First thing I noticed about the PU was that he wasn't working in the slot, he was over the catchers head. This is fundamental. Aside from that, he looked solid in his movements and confident in his body language. Has he received any training?

 

The video was painful to watch for the base umpire, so I gave up...

 

What was your evaluation of these umpires?

BU -

1. Prep stepping. That's good. Obviously someone has taught him.

2. Needs to be closer to the foul line for those bounding ball calls he owns.

3. On the pop foul, he needs to be going with the fielder, if there's a chance of a catch.

4. Fly ball to the outfield, he should be coming in and pivoting if he doesn't have the C/NC. He watched the ball.

OVERALL not a bad job. I'm assuming the uniform was acceptable for this league.

What was your evaluation of these umpires?

 

Very similar to yours for the PU... He is trying to set up in the slot, but is too far over, behind the catcher. I could also tell he wasn't tracking the ball, because he would occasionally (none on video) call a pitch where it was caught, not where it crossed.

 

Was it the video that was painful or the BU himself?

 

The only training either have received is a couple hours long training session by myself. This was the PU's first game ever, and the BU's first game outside of tee ball he did last year.

 

The uniform is acceptable for the Juniors umpires in Majors and below. If they want to move up though, I require them to get the grey slacks.

HP -

1. Need to address his stance. His head height, foot positioning, and getting into the slot.

2. Decent timing on his strike/ball calls. He could slow down just a bit more.

3. Put the ball in play.

4. Don't call time to brush the plate (working solo?)

5. Have him practice removing his mask. He seems to be uncomfortable.

6. Keep his mask in his left hand and learn to put it on left handed. Potential problems if he either has to change it to give a mechanic or (worse) he punches an out with his mask.

7. It looks like he working solo, and I know it's tough to see em all, but touches at the plate need to take priority. Teach him the head-on-a-swivel.

OVERALL - Not bad. A few things need attention. I didn't hear any chirping.

Thanks @Jocko! This was the same game, so he was with the BU... He got chirping later in the game, to the extent that I told him he should have warned the coach that was chirping. He wasn't seeing the corners well, and I think that had to do with his crappy stance.

 

For their first games of the careers, I think they did a pretty good job!

@mjr_2013 - if they were working as a crew BOTH of their positioning sucks, but you can't fix what you don't know is broken.

I thought that you had gotten to a point in your Gear Collection (hoarding) wherein you had _plenty_ of slacks not only for you in every situation and combination of colors (Navy still looks better with Heather Grey than Charcoal), but to loan to the Probies (Probationals, Juniors, Pledges, etc.).
