This almost happened to me 3 times Thursday night, but what happens when the umpire gets hit by a line drive?

Where do you place the runners? Do they advance only 1 base?

Thanks

rjt6,

If the BU is "inside" (i.e., closer to the plate than the infielders) and is hit by an untouched batted ball in fair territory, we have Umpire Interference.

The ball is immediately dead, the BR is awarded 1B, and any other runners return to their TOP base unless forced by the BR's award of 1B.

If the BU is "outside" (i.e., farther away from the plate than the infielders) it is simply "live ball, play the bounce".

BU hit by batted ball when in B or C is Ump INT: dead ball, BR awarded 1B, other runners advance only if forced.

BU hit when in A or behind the infielders is nothing: play on.

OBR:

6.08 - The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when --

(d) A fair ball touches an umpire or a runner on fair territory before touching a fielder. If a fair ball touches an umpire after having passed a fielder other than the pitcher, or having touched a fielder, including the pitcher, the ball is in play.

^^this^^ The question is whether or not you gave the fielder a chance to actually field the ball.

BU hit while in "A" will normally be a foul ball (ball either in flight or bounded past 1B in foul ground). The only exception is a bounding ball that passed 1B in fair ground.

For that exception to come into play, the BU would somehow have to be positioned in front of F3. That doesn't seem likely. I suppose there might be some bizarre popup scenario where F3 goes out and BU comes in for some reason, then a gust of wind blows it on top of BU's head. Otherwise, the ball will have passed F3 already and is therefore still in play even if it hits BU

What I meant is that the exception I described is the only "play on" scenario with BU in A that I could think of. Your scenario no longer has the BU in A.

If BU is in A and gets hits by a line drive (as it says in the OP), how is it play on?

How would it not simply be foul and BU pays a fine to the kangaroo court for being way too slow to react.

I would assume they are referring to a play when a ball is hit to the 1B and as the U1 is moving to get into position in fair territory the IB missed the ball and then it hits U1.  In that case I believe they should play on.

If it's not umpire interference, play on. If foul and dead, "play on" wouldn't be for long.

Seems to me the implication is that if an umpire gets hit in A, it's probably foul

I know. It's not INT. Play on.
