Fed rules (I don't think there is a rules difference here). Unsuccessful finding a similar CB play.

 

R3, less than 2 outs, R3 breaks on a suicide squeeze before F1 commits to pitch. F1 disengages and throws to F2 to make a play on R3. B bats the thrown ball. Is this an illegally batted ball (B out) or interference (R3 out) ?

Interference.  R3 is out.  You can't illegally bat a throw, only a pitch.

The INT is easy to prove. The illegally batted ball is harder, because it's not defined in Rule 2 (or anywhere else that I have seen).

 

Illegally batted balls include those hit while the batter is touching the ground completely outside the batter's box (7-3-2) and those hit with an illegal bat (7-4-1a). The former requires a legal pitch. Since an illegal bat doesn't even have to be used (entering the box with it is sufficient to declare the batter out), I'm not even sure it belongs on the list.

 

Any other illegally batted balls? BOO doesn't count, since it's the batter, not the batting of the ball, that is illegal.

7.3.5 SITUATION G:

With no outs and F1 in the set position, R1, who is on third base, attempts to steal home. F1 legally steps backward off the pitcher's plate and throws home. B2 hits the ball.

RULING: Typically, batter's interference is a delayed dead ball in order to give the defense an opportunity to make an out on the initial putout attempt. Since the batter hit the ball, the defense was not afforded an opportunity to make a play. Therefore, the ball is declared dead immediately. R1 is out because of B2's interference. (5-1-2a, 7-3-5, 8-4-2l)

IIRC @ricka56's fellow association member was claiming that this is a case of an illegally batted ball, and that therefore the batter must be declared out.

He was saying it was an illeagally batted ball violation (batter out). I talked to him today and have him now convinced that 7.3.5G specifies an interference call (R3 out).

 

But I also heard that this is a OBR/Fed rules diff and that it is an illegal batted ball in OBR. I looked at OBR 6.06c, but there is no mention of getting R3 on a play at the plate. My 2008 BRD says that there is an officail interp and that it is in line with Fed interp 7.3.5G. Can anyone confirm/refute the rule/interp diff?

Rick, you seem to be getting a lot of bad info. The OBR ruling is the same, and for exactly the same reasons. 7.09(c )

J/R has the same play (less than 2 outs, batter hits a throw with R3 stealing) with the same ruling.(interference, R3 is out).
