I have a buddy trying to get into the game this year and I'm trying to help him get some gear (pretty much everything-clothes and gear) to get started at an affordable price point. Normally, I know, do it right from the beginning. But he's testing the water to see if he even likes it so I don't want him to have to drop $400+ starting out. Any help out there?

$37 Champion chest protector is a great way to start.

$35 Wilson mask, or usually you can get one donated by another umpire.  Shoot, have him wear his partner's mask for the first few plates.

$10 catcher leg guards can be purchased on craigslist just about anywhere.

$65 Reebok plate shoes

Navy shirts are free from vet umpires.  Also free are indicators, plate brushes, ball bags, and belts.

$7 black hat.  $10 jock strap and cup.

He's now ready to go at under $200.

p.s. the guy with the Champion chest protectors has always taken $5 off the "buy it now" price, for a Best Offer. And that's the best deal on gear you'll ever find.

He can get an All Star FM25 mask from academy.com for $25.

Also, he can go to Walmart and get a pair of black steel toe sneakers for something around $30 or so that will work with the catchers shins.

Also check Craigslist.  Around here there always seems to be "complete" packages for sale from people who went out and spent a lot of money, used the gear a couple times, and realized umpiring was not for them.

I'm in need of a new/used ball bag, color doesn't matter, if anyone has a extra one to donate I would gladly appreciate it or if anyone knows where I can get one for a really good price, either or is appreciated.
