I hate to but I must take exception. I understand the volunteer yaya but come on. If someone volunteered to carry your groceries and dropped them all over the place would you sing their praises? IMO, it's disrespectful to the game for some of these guys to be as bad as they are. I get paid. And make a lot of $ doing what I love. But I honor the game by trying to be the best umpire on the field. Look sharp. Good timing. Good mechanics. Good positioning. Good rules knowledge. Seems to me LL likes smitty or they'd do something about it.

And with all the $$$ LL is making, they ought to provide a week long pro clinic for the WS officials.

Even this wouldn't help. If it takes 10-20 years to get there the bad habits are now second nature. Once they left the clinic, when it comes to crunch time, they would revert back to their "comfort zone".

This is 100% correct. These guys are well known commodities, they have worked in their local leagues for years, sometimes decades. LL has seen them work in District, Sectionals, Divisional and Regional tournaments. There are no surprises.  You can't fix deeply engrained bad habits with a week of 'reprogramming'. Bottom line, the game is for the kids, and it's terrible when the umpires get attention because of incompetence, or crazy behavior.

It is a requirement that WS Umpires have attended a LL Regional Clinic.

They are what they are and what LL accepts.

If you don't like what you see, turn off the TV.

They didn't volunteer for years and pay their own way to deserve to be ripped apart by those who feel they must correct every mistake they make.

I am the wrong guy to receive this kind of rant.  I can queue up my performance on an ESPN LL plate game from last year and look at that with pride.  I'm pretty confident that I worked that game like a well-trained umpire should.  The fact that my performance is lumped with some of the terrible umpiring I've seen this season cheapens my accomplishment.

 

That guy from Canada was an embarrassment to us all.  The selection process cheapens two of my friends who are outstanding umpires (both work college baseball) who worked the LLWS in the last decade.  

 

If you're going to apply to such an event, you'd better be well-trained and then be prepared to suffer the slings and arrows if you are not.

 

Finally, some people should be rewarded with a LLWS for many years of service.  Others should be given a gold watch and a pat on the back, not an assignment to an event televised all around the world.

I don't care if you umpire as a volunteer or as a person that gets paid. Any official in a championship should be assigned/selected solely on the basis of merit not on seniority. The best games should have the best officials. To do otherwise is a disservice to everyone that is involved. Just my opinion.

We don't have LL here in Alabama. At least, nowhere that I'm aware of.

@Chip - The fact is, a vast majority of ppl don't get to see 'real' umpires calling youth games. These nationally televised smitty umps set the bar so low. These antics and histrionics become the public perception of youth umpires as a whole. To that end, I feel it warranted to care where a non-elected spokesman wears his ball bag. Why not wear the shins and cp outside? Smitty it up!
