How do you know I didn't go over it after the game?

It really makes me mad when a coach comes out and talks to my partner about a call I just made. Come talk to me you idiot. All I better hear in that case is not my call coach or someone is getting there a$$ chewed after the game

We've all had a coach come out to us after our partners have made a tough call. They are trying to get us to disagree with our partner. If they come to me and I think my partner might have totally kicked the call, I send them to my partner right away. But I often say something like, "You need to discuss that call with him, he's a good umpire and he was in position to make that call." or "Looked like he got it right to me coach."

With that the coach rarely delays the game any further and we "Play Ball". Their total reason for coming out is to get you to agree with them. Take that away and they're done.

Because you didn't say you did? I'm not a mind reader, generally.

...as well as a mistaken impression that plate meetings are for things other than introductions, lineups, and ground rules.

+1

From working with newer (1st/2nd year) umpires this summer, the plate meeting is the biggest game management problem that most of them have. Don't know where to put their mask, how to handle lineup cards, trying to hold all five baseballs while taking lineup cards, talking too much, not knowing what to cover and what not to cover, etc. Even the guys who do a solid job on the field have a problem with it. I can't say too much about the new guys though because I worked first base in a high school playoff game this spring and the third base umpire didn't quit talking during the entire plate meeting.

Five???!!!! :wow:

Lucky dog!

Exactly! Anything else is wasted bar time (insert beer mug emoticon here).

I think we all have this mistaken impression that these RATS are paying attention at the plate meeting.

Just curious, why do you call them RATS?

Coaches are rats because they're rats. Dont trust them. Don't believe me? Learn the hard way.

Coaches are your best friend until the call goes against them and coaching is a brotherhood they'll be on each other side everytime

Plate meetings can also be to cover any tournament rules that need to be known such as what rule set is being used (this was especially important this year with the new fake to third balk rule), whether there are warnings for balks, etc. So in some circumstances it is appropriate to address how the umpires should be addressed. It's called preventive umpiring.

Uhh, no. Telling coaches how you should be addressed is an indicator that you are incompetent or think they are or both.

Do you like Rats?

So you call coaches rats because you dislike them then?

Nope. Hate, distrust, loath are better.

There are certainly coaches who are harder to deal with than others, but I can't think of one that I hate or loathe. I like most of them and some are friends.

I agree. I don't hate any coaches, and actually only dislike a few. Coaches acting out against perceived injustices is a long standing tradition, and comes with the territory. If you understand that going in, it becomes much easier to deal with.

I've been a player and coach much longer than I ever umpired, and I still coach baseball and football, so I'd be a hypocrite if I said that I hated all coaches. That being said, I've noticed that many coaches, particularly in the travel ranks, lack perspective. They think that every 12U baseball game is life and death, and they tend to not just treat umps like crap, but they treat their players just as badly. Typically, they create a culture of negativity around their team that makes it's way to the players and the parents. So, yes, I would consider those guys RATS.

I did not say All coaches.

But most travel coaches and most all the USSSA coaches here in Georgia.

Right after I posted last time I thought of these guys. That is a different story.

I have one local coach that I have absolutely no use for. I have never tossed him, think he is an excellent instructor but as a coach he sucks. He has also actively tried to get me drummed out of umpiring. Other than that there are guys I don't respect, others I have a great respect for. Some are even good friends. But other than the one guy, who I always try to bring my A game for, coaches are coaches. Like the movie title, The Good, the Bad, the Ugly.

Sent from my C771 using Tapatalk 2
