So there I was..working a Mustang game (12U) baseball game solo.  Starting the game and the home team is tossing on the field.  I mistakenly forget to provide the game ball for the pitcher to take his warm-up pitches.  Starting pitcher, 12 years old, tells me "I need the damn ball".  At this point, what would you have done?

Like I told a parent I ejected this weekend along with her son who was playing...."Manners are free lady"....she said "we paid good money for this tournament"

Eject him. Only way them little runts are going to learn!

Unfortunately the little runt probably learns nothing except that the umpire was a jerk, because that's what his coach and parents will most likely tell him.

Parents like that probaly caused him to act like that.

I might not immediately eject, but I'm absolutely walking him over to his coach right then and there and seeing if he reads the punk the riot act. If the coach doesn't want to handle it properly, well...that kid's leash will be about a molecule long. It's a technique I've seen and used in football, generally - but not always - with effectiveness.

It could depend upon the kid's demeanor (was he angry, demanding, trying to be funny, etc...?) and volume, but I'm at least issuing a (possibly quiet) warning no matter the situation.

Worst case?  He's gone.

Several years ago I had a batter look at strike 2 that was a c#@k shoot. He stepped back out of the box, grumbled about the pitch being a ball and then called me a m^&%#$f$%^er! Loud enough for my partner in the middle and his third base coach to hear it. As I proceed to dump him the coach is coming to get him. The coach read him the riot act in the dugout. After the game the players mom CUSSED out the coach for "embarassing" her son!!

Depends... I could see this being said as a joke...

If I know he was angry for some reason,

If I was confused as to what he said or his demeanor (most likely), I'd probably say "Excuse me?" and the response would cause either an ejection or an apology from me...

If he was being a funny guy, I'd walk him the ball and say "You know better than to use that language on the field."

Throw him the damn ball.

Throw him your Mariano Rivera super cutter, and hope it hits him in his little brat nose.

@UMP45 Well we know where the kid got it the apple does not fall far from the tree.  There was a vising coach from out of town to play vs the city i was umpiring for softball he got upset over my calling runner out early.

He didn't swear but i put my foot down so he never open his mouth again till the game was over telling me that i need to move out of the way. :smachhead:  I stayed where i needed to so i could make the call on the play.

I didn't mean it as abuse. Your points might get lost for lack of presentation. That's all.
