Now how long until they include the umps in the suit, because the umpire even thought there was something funny about the bat.

There will certainly be some knuckleheads who will claim the ump should have done something, but what can he do?  Nothing. Not a thing.

I actually hope the parents win the suit if it is proven the bat was altered. This madness has to end before someone gets killed

Shaved and rolled I bet. ( It does give the bat lots of POP!)

“Gentlemen are all of your players properly and legally equipped to participate in this game per the rules and regulations set forth in the LL manual?â€

BUT if an umpire believes that a certain piece of equipment MAY be illegal he should remove it from play. Soon as the umpire made that statement HE then assumed some liability.

I have over the howls of protests of the coach BUT I was right.

Funny thing was the bat was put in play by the city attorney of the town where I was umpiring.

Are LL umpires supposed to check equipment?  Physically?

I don't do LL, so I don't know ....

I would think so, But there is no way to know a bat is shaved by a physical inspection.  If you begin removing equipment you suspect has been altered with absolutely no proof, you are asking for problems.

Remember, they can't use what you DON'T say against you! In this day and age you never know who is video taping or recording sporting events. The best advice, 'you have the right to remain silent, use it.'

I haven'r done LL in severeal years, but when I did, the umpires were required to inspect all equipment prior to the game.  This would not catch a rolled bat, however.

And how much do you want to bet that the bat is in pieces someplace.

Yep.

Seperate all of the players and ask them about the superbat.

Exactly...If it was altered, the truth will come out. The fact that all of them were using the same bat makes me believe it was altered. That is, if they were truly all using the same bat. Some teams may have four  versions of the same bat

That's why as an umpire you don't talk to people!!! The less you say...

Agreed...But for me, I have a hard time with the acoustic signature of a shaved composite bat. I know guys that use them in slow pitch and I cannot tell the difference

I read a long time ago that there were devices being developed that would test either the trampoline effect or the acoustic signature of all bats and that some day Umps would be required to use one or the other prior to all games....My first thought was, ''Great, More time and expense wasted checking equipment".

If the bat was illegally altered, I'd think the obvious culprit is the person who brought the altered bat. Not the umpire, the local league, or Little League International.

I still think requiring wood is a good answer.

It amazes me that there are numerous companies that offer the service of shaving and rolling...Not sure how they live with their conscience. If I knew a kid was seriously injured due to one of my shaved bats, I'd want to hang myself.

You can be assured that LL will throw an umpire under the bus if they have reason to believe, or can prove an ump failed to check for, has a RESONABLE SUSPICION of such, and fails to remove said illegal equipment PRIOR to the game and a lawsuit is pending.

You must not be a lawyer.

Correct. Deflection of liability.

What does LL require their umpires to do regarding inspection of equipment?

My group WILL not do LL ball.

We just ask the following:

“Gentlemen are all of your players properly and legally equipped to participate in this game per the rules and regulations set forth in the XYZ manual?â€
