I struggle with obstruction in FED. Here's a situation from my game last night..

R1. Base hit to shallow left field. R1 would have no shot at 3rd. As he rounds 2nd, there is slight contact with F6. Is that obstruction and a base award?

If he had no shot at 3B, you'd judge that the contact did not hinder him. No OBS. When you see the contact and make that judgment, signal safe and verbalized "That's nothing!" Doing so shows that you saw it and ruled on it, and can often prevent questions.

and in the opposite way ..... point and say "that's obstruction" if the runner is hindered ...... if he's safe to his 'destination' ....it's waived .....

this happened in a tournament last weekend ..........the runner was potentially obstructed on his way to 3rd, I pointed and said 'that's obstruction' ....  runner scored anyhow ....3rd base coach said 'thanks Jeff' aknowledging the fact that he knew I at least saw it .....

Jeff in FED if you rule obstruction then you must award the extra base. Cant keep him at second. Unless he hasn't made it to second yet.

This is why I stress not announcing it unless you believe he was actually obstructed. Same contact as the OP, he gets thrown out going back to second, that is probably obstruction, announce or and award third even if he had no shot at third.

Its not really that he had no shot its whether he thinks he has a shot and is trying to advance (OBS) or knows he has no shot and is just in the process of slowing down and returning to the base (no OBS, but a good opportunity to do some preventive umpiring and talk to F6)
