Snapping Turtle

My son walks out the front door and there is a 14 to 16 inch snapping turtle in the middle of the street. He got halfway across and stopped. We were concerned he would get hit so we were trying to get him in a patch of bamboo. Todd tapped his tail to get him moving, result, turtle turning on him. So I get a four foot fiber pole and get him moving, car comes along and scared him so he stopped again. So I try moving him alone and he turns on me. A couple of city workers came down and scooted him to the bamboo with a five gallon bucket. He bit the daylights out of that. As they got him to the edge of the road, he got flipped on his back. The worker started to turn him over and he flipped himself really quickly. They went and got a shovel and got him in the bamboo, right back out he came. They are much faster than I suspected. The two neighbors decided to take him to the river two blocks away. They slid him into a plastic recycling box and put in the back of their pick-up. They went in the house for a minute, came back out to snap a picture and he was out again. So they had to take him to the river and then recapture him. Just a funny series of events. 

According to the internet that turtle is at least 24-25 yrs old. I don't know a lot about them but I do know they have very long necks  and reach around on you trying to pick them up. I was advised to pick him up by the tail but it was probably 30 lbs so I was skeptical of that plan.

I had a similar experience a couple years ago, but I was on my own with no available implements of destruction, so after he almost took my fingers off, I just gave him a boot to the side of the road, laughed at him and went on my way.

Be carefull because if they latch hold of your finger or something they won't let go until it lightnings.

Yes, we were all in agreement that discretion was the point of the day. A snapping turtle can straight ruin your day.

A good bumper sticker, and probably applies to anyone who's tried to get a snapping turtle out of the road.

Yes, we were all in agreement that discretion was the point of the day. A snapping turtle can straight ruin your day.  

 

If you must, use your right hand.  You need one more finger on your left to call balls, than you do on your right for strikes!
