Coach comes out to the mound to visit with pitcher during his warm ups. 3 batters into the inning he asks for time and makes a mound visit. Plate ump says that's his 2nd visit, gotta change the pitcher.

Does the warmup visit constitute as a visit, if so, as a courtesy, should the coach be warned about his warmup visit, or should he be expected to know?

If the convo during warmups does not delay the game, it is not a visit.

If it does, then it is, and the umpire must inform the coach of that fact in order to avoid ugliness.

I know the whole delaying of the game argument, but define "delaying of the game". Its a judgement call I know, I mean if the catcher is not yet behind the plate (and nobody is there to warm him up), is it delaying of the game? If the catcher is there, and most of the rest of the defense is not yet on the field, is it really delaying of the game? Is it the length of time the coach is out there? How do you judge it?

Takes longer than it otherwise would to get the 5 pitches in.  And if you think it is, then tell the coach before you charge him with a visit.

In between innings is not a usual charged visit in my head.  If manager delays my start, after I tell him?!?!!?  That might be another story, have never had it happen though.

If he is talking while he warms up, no problem. Catcher not out there I am asking the manager where he is. But if he is talking and the pitcher standing talking, I will tell him to move along and let him warm up. Any mouth and I will tell he goes or gets charged. Never fails.

what rule set are you playing FED or OBR?

What does it matter for this post?  I think they are treated the same here (unless some youth program has a different take on it of course)

before or after the all star break? before or after the 7th inning stretch? But seriously, i'm charging a trip in OBR so long as the trip is not "brief" in my judgment, more or less he had better be handing him the baseball saying a word or 2 before walking away from the pitcher, any prolonged conversation is going to be charged as a trip. PBUC manual clearly states that the managers trip starts the moment he crosses the foul line to talk to the pitcher and that any attempt to circumvent this rule shall be charged as a trip.

I disagree with your approach, and I think you're misreading the PBUC guidance (which IIRC applies to situations where time has been requested, not warm-ups). An "attempt to circumvent the rule" would involve delaying the game without being charged a conference. No delay = no trip.

I would urge you to consider the purpose of this rule before attempting to apply it on-field as you're suggesting. Warm-ups involve a certain amount of dead time, and so long as that time is not extended by a coach, IMO the umpire has no interest in becoming involved.

The pitcher has been replaced.  This trip already happened...

Just got several interps from reliable sources, in obr this IS a charged trip. For the simple reason that the head coach/pitching coach/manager/bench coach/parent that sits on the bench has had ample opportunity to speak with the pitcher while on the bench and in the dugout. Each reliable source I spoke with would charge this a trip, one of which of these sources is HWUS. The only time you will not charge a "warm up trip" would be where the third or first base coach is walking across the field hands the baseball to the pitcher and says a word or two, any prolonged conversation would be charged a trip. In FED there is a stipulation that allows a head coach or coach to speak with the pitcher during warm ups without being charged a trip so long as it does not delay the game. This is NOT the same as OBR.

Ample time?  How can one assure that he has had ample time?

Example:  If it's at the beginning of an inning, the kid may have been left on the bases and out there for a while.  The head coach/pitching coach/manager/bench coach/parent could quite possibly be the same person, where as HE had been coaching the bases and not afforded this AMPLE time you speak of.

I guess I just don't get the whole "because he had ample time" thing, because as I stated, he just might not of had ample time...

If it's during an inning, as I said before, the trip has already happened hence, the pitching change.Let him talk (albeit briefly) to his pitcher while warming up.

I was just given the official mlb/milb interpretation of this. In this sitcuation no pitching change has occurred, again the interpretation reads that the trip starts when the coach/manager crosses the foul line to talk to his pitcher. OBR and MLBUM/PBUC Manual do not give exceptions for visits during warm ups, therefore this is a charged trip. Again, there is no stipulation to allow a coach or manager to visit the pitcher while taking warm up throws without being charged with a visit. This is the interpretation from HWUS and several other very experienced umpires (AAA, MLB, D1 College)

As a guy that has coached and umpired I have been charged on the between innings visit. I was being very hard on U2 about a call at third base. I was not yelling at him but I was questioning him in a firm voice about a drop ball on a tag. I called time and asked him if he would get help from his partner. He said that he would not. For the next 3 batters I was on him and I was getting under his skin and we both knew it. End of inning and I am walking back to 1st base dugout. I step in front of the plate and tell my pitcher to throw strikes as I walk. He barks from just behind second "that's a visit coach". My pitcher is on the mound and my catcher is running to get behind the plate. There was no delay in the game as my catcher hadn't even had time to get his CP on and grab his mask yet. I went directly to the 1st base box and asked him why he charged me with the visit. His reply...you talked to your pitcher while in fair territory...

Sure, but the question was whether this should be a trip, not whether some umpire somewhere has mistakenly charged a trip. ;)

I agree that the MLB and MiLB interps is different but the OP said "coach" so I was thinking 1BC or 3BC went to the mound and at all non professional levels Im not charging a visit for that unless it delays the game and I've told the coach its delaying the game and he still stays out there.
