BUT being so far off of the base warranted the out?

When I heard this my response was, "WHAT? The umpire agreed? I know of no rule set that supports this, you'll have to find that one and show me".

 

Guys, I don’t claim know everything, I’m pretty sure on this one, and can’t find in any Baseball Rule Book. Even went to www.kickball.com to see if they made any changes that could be creeping into our world, no changes there....

“The base runner slid past third base and in to foul territory. So much so it took him quite an effort to return to the base as he slid almost a body length past it. He did however beat the defensive player to the bag and avoid the tag, BUT being so far off of the base warranted the outâ€

 

 

P.S. If there are any local or organization specific rules out there to support this, please…I don’t even know what to say.

The only thing I can come up with is that the knucklehead who wrote that was thinking of (and likely grossly misinterpreting) the rule that says the runner may not leave his basepath by more than 3' for the purpose of avoiding a tag. Which is in all codes.

JM has one good explanation for it.

 

An other I can think of might be that the ball go there before the runner and the tag was down and even if technically the runner wasn't tagged maybe the umpire gave the benefit of the doubt to the defense and called the out.

Only other thing I could think of is if the 3BC interfered with the runner trying to "help" him back to the bag after he overslid.  But as written in the OP the out call makes no sense.

I've got a mental picture of this happening in my head and I can't stop laughing "watching" this guy slide right off the field. Could happen in the Twins/Mets games tomorrow night. Sure seems like conditions might be right for some icy patches.
