Have you ever had this play in a game?

How close did the catcher get to getting interference called on him? Would you treat his actions on the steal of home differently than you would if he was coming into the strike zone to receive a pitch on a steal/play at 2nd only?

If that's the one from last year's SEC tourney, I was at that game. It was awesome.

I would call it.

e. If any defensive player interferes with the batter’s swing or prevents the

individual from striking at a pitched ball;

(2) Any runner attempting to steal on a catcher’s interference with the

batter’s swing shall be awarded the base the runner is attempting to reach

If a runner is not attempting to steal on the catcher’s interference, the

individual is not entitled to the next base, if not forced to advance because

of the batter being awarded first base.

Exception

—If there is catcher’s interference on a squeeze play, the batter

is awarded first base, the run scores and all other runners advance one base on

the balk created by the interference.

F2 clearly took the pitch in front of the plate (freeze the video at .04).  Not sure about NCAA rules, but in OBR and Fed:

OBR:  Balk on pitcher and CI on catcher.  Batter awarded first for CI and all runners advance on the balk.

Fed:  Catcher's obstruction.  Batter awarded first and all runners advance due to being forced.  (Also, all runners were stealing, so they would be awarded the next base anyway - such as in an R2, R3 situation).

NCAA? (EDIT:  Thanks Jimurray, you posted while I was posting).

Apparently, Vandy has a propensity for triple steals. They did it against Florida in the tourney.

Interesting that it happened on a RH pitcher and a LH batter.

Also think there probably was CI on this.

absolutely..................IMO as well....

So you and I would call the CI, then, coach, "do you want the penalty or the play?". Coach says "I want the triple steal keep the batter at the plate, oh, BTW, what was the pitch?" I'm guessing it was a ball. Luckily, I think it was pitch 1or2 so it wasnt a critical count.

Why wouldn't you take the CI with bases loaded. Batter goes to first and those forced to advance move up (which is everyone) do so and a run scores anyway.

Is this a balk for catcher being out of the box?

Is this a balk for catcher being out of the box? Triple steal on the record books.

It's CI plus balk due to steal of home. Except it wasn't.

Might depend on game situation, including who the batter was, and who was on deck . . . granted, of course, that an IBB could still get you back to the same as taking the CI . . .

I just thought of this but what does "attempting to steal" actually mean? Personally, I would say it would be the runner obviously committing to the next base without the batter putting the ball in play.

Yep, except the batter can put the ball in play.

It's the same judgment in the exception for throwing to an unoccupied base.

Coach doesn't get the option on the balk though.

That would be fun. "Coach, I can put your batter back at the plate but you still don't have a triple steal because I can't ignore the balk."
