The other side of the story.....

The last two days, during our huge Spring Nationals Tournament, I had the unfortunate opportunity to be assigned as "Standby" or as we like to call it here "Field Bit@#"....

Basically, our assignor assigns one extra umpire per tournament site to take care of any/all umpire issues at the location. You also have to keep the site director off the umpires when games are running late, jump on a field for an inning to allow the BU to get plate gear on so the following game starts on time, etc.

The other fun part is if there is an ejection, and the coach goes to the site director to complain, you get to deal with it.

It is amazing how the story changes from the time a coach gets the hook, to the time they take the walk of shame to the directors table..... Its like 2 different incidents! One coach told me that he got ejected for telling the BU that he should eat a salad once in a while... BU reported that the coach called him a Fat A$$ and an A$$hole, ran on the field without calling time to argue.

Anyone here ever had to deal with the other side????

I run into this every tournament we run. We bring in paid umpires for our tournament month. I have to handle all issues with them. They know I have their backs, and they like it that way.

Managers have long memories and umpires usually have short one's. Also, if a manager is tossed he must leave the premises immediatley. He can appeal to our board via e mail.

From where I sit I can see 4 of the 5 fields. MOST of the times the managers are out of control. IMHO.

I have absolutely dealt with that side. First I get every report for any HS ejection. I am on the BOD for our men's league so I get all those reports. Plus I TD or UIC USSSA tournaments.

So, the coach has actually said what the BU in the OP reported (after the ellipsis) to you, but the coach tell's you the part before the ellipsis and ""lies"" to you. That has actually happened to you MST or others you work with?

I had a player in a NSA national men's FP tournament comes to the UIC and  to me as the TD to complain about an umpire. He says we need to come watch this umpire because he was out of control. We ask what is the problem. He said it started with a banger at first that thought he missed but it could have gone either way, they argued the call. Then he refused to give the  SS time when he got the ball back in the infield. Evidently the rule is it has to go to the pitcher before he can give time. He said the umpire told them he could not give them time until the ball was back to the pitcher and the player told him was an a$$hole, which is when he got tossed. 

So what you are telling us you guys got upset over a 50/50 call that you admit may have been right. Then you are arguing about not getting time when you knew it was against the rules to do so. You understand you are asking the umpire to be an extra defender because your SS can't throw the ball to the pitcher. Then you cussed him and you are surprised you got tossed, do we have all this straight. 

The player blinked a couple of times and said," So you aren't going to do anything?" "Ahhhh, no.Now head to the parking lot."

Later that night a bunch of us were talking about it with the BU from the game and honestly, nobody else ever had a coach say something like that before.... They were not a local team from here in AZ, just in town for this huge tournament.

A few years ago I tosses a teams stud. The coach filed an appeal. I wasn't part of the process, but I was sent their appeal and my assigner wanted to read their appeal and give my comments. 

 

My comments were, "I don't think this was my ejection, the only things that are similar are the names."

In Washington, we have to ask the coach if they would "like to appeal the ejection" in a high school game. They are still done for the rest of the game but they are allowed to appeal the suspension for the second game as well as the severity of any penalty that may come with it. So far I have never heard of an appeal being upheld for a legit EJ. Heck... last year in a playoff game when I ran a kid for pretending to be Picasso, my assignor as well as the head guy for the state knew about it before the next out was made!

I was doing a game last year, men's I think, and I made a rule interp that the manager disagreed with. I saw him walk around behind the dugout and call somebody. My assigner's name is also Mike, when he came back to the field I ask him what Mike said. The looks managers can give you are priceless.
