According to MLBN, if USA loses tomorrow, they will finish last in the pool, and according to WBC rules, will have to re-qualify before the 2017 Classic.

They really need to make this opening round a double round robin... One game shouldn't determine whether a team finishes in first or last place in the pool, especially with the implications of the next Classic added on.

---------------------

Losing two out of three in the first round will kick them out, plain and simple... pretty much double-elimination. In international team competition, the format is pretty standard. There really isn't time for a double-round robin since MLB starts in three weeks, and they have to start/finish the semis and final rounds.  As far as the qualifying for 2017, any team that can't get out of the first round AND finishes last in pool play (especially with all of the games in their own country... the country the game was invented in) needs to go through the grinder like everybody else.  MAYBE it'll wake up USA Baseball and more players will want to contribute next time.

But... one game at a time. Let's take care of Canada first. If we don't... well...

No suspensions are coming for "The Brawl".

"Because at least one club -- and potentially both -- will not advance to the second round, WBCI has determined that disciplinary measures would not have a meaningful corrective impact," the statement read. "Thus, discipline will not be imposed beyond today's seven game ejections."

Well that sets up the USA vs. Canada showdown in the elimination game to see who goes to the second round in Miami. Game time is 4:00 EDT Sunday.  With all due respect to my brothers in blue up in the Great White North... I really don't want to get eliminated by Canada.

It'll be Derek Holland of the Rangers for Team USA up against some kid from AA for Canada.

Win or go home... or back to Spring Training.

Not just some kid from AA. He's 2010 first round draft pick Jameson Taillon. Drafted out of Woodland high school, Texas. In his 1st two minor league seasons he's got a 3.72 era, 1.15 whip and has struck out 8+ batters per 9 innings. Not bad for a kid who won't turn 22 until November. Should be fun to watch.

I missed his name the firt time around, but I looked up a little more on him right after I posted that. Wasn't he drafted right after Bryce Harper? I think a lot of people will know who he is after today, and we'll all probably see more of him later in the summer. Biggest game of his life, and I wish him luck... but not TOO MUCH luck :)

"Hey kid! You're gettin' the ball against USA in an elimination game. No pressure! Go get 'em!"  I bet he's stoked...

Agreed. This'll be fun.

The brawl got nasty because Mexico tried to cheap shot a bunch of former hockey players. I'd guess that 57 from Canada threw down on the ice once or twice.

What was the cheap shot?

I would say after trying to hit the batter twice before and getting warned by the ump, yes, that would qualify as a cheap shot.  Sad but true, run differential matters in this tourney so teams are going to do things they would normally never do, for example bunt in the 9th with a several run lead.  Don't like the rules, don't play the game

I equate this to a few years ago when Donovan McNabb didn't know overtime was sudden death (or claimed to not know)...I don't think F5 knew the rules and he called for the hit.  That much you can see.

I think this whole "not knowing the rules" excuse is a cop-out. Any kind of team administrator worth his salt is drilling into the minds of players before the games, every run counts. In 2006, Canada was eliminated after round 1 with a 2-1 record, and in round 2 Japan managed to advance despite going 1-2. And I don't think the fact the batter got hit even after the warning was a cheap shot. On its own, yea, it cleared the benches, but if it wasn't for the actions of the Mexico players I identified above, I doubt this escalates beyond your traditional bench clearing incident. I will say this though - credit to the pitcher for throwing at a batter the right way. AKA, he didn't throw at the head. All 3 pitches were back / rib shots.

On another note, I just got back from having breakfast with an MiLB guy before he heads down for the start of Minor League spring at his assigned complex tomorrow...we're both in agreement that Gorman should've dumped F1 straight up after the second pitch inside instead of issuing the warnings. Mexico had nothing to play for, hence the warnings presented absolutely zero deterrence, as everyone saw.

I'd like to see a Federation-style rule added in regarding fights for the 2017 Classic... Teams and players are hesitant enough to go play in this because of injury, and now tensions are rising on a daily basis in these games.

Say Adrian Gonzalez had been seriously hurt in the brawl. How would Dodgers fans, players, and ownership feel about their stars playing in future WBCs?

What happened in yesterday's game is part of the unwritten rules of baseball.

The USA team need to stop being overconfident, that's the reason why in every Classic they end up with the tail between the legs.  A new rule is not needed to create an advantage to the USA do to the fact that the game was invented in this country.  If they loose they need to classify like everybody else.

Triple header today: Spain vs. Venezuula (playing for pride) at 12:30 ET. USA vs. Canada (win or head back to Spring Training) at 4:00; and at 7:30, the Dominican Republic vs. Puerto Rico (Bragging rights and top seed in their Pool on the line. They split two in Feb. at the Caribbean WS, and PR lost in the finals to Mexico by 1... and they're still a little hacked about that.)  Between all that and NASCAR, it's gonna' be a pretty unproductive Sunday...

The whole "run differential per inning" tie-breaker needs to just go away. Tie-breakers are needed, but encouraging teams to run up the score shouldn't be an option.

I personally have no issue with run differential plus mercy as this tournament does.  Fact is, sometimes in life, you get face palmed, rofl stomped or just plain out get the shyte kicked out of you.  Sometimes in life we lose, and we lose real bad, so you come back the next time and do something about it.  Canada had been mercied out the game before against Italy, they picked up their socks, came back the next day and played like a team who wanted to win.  Did anyone else see poor sportsmanship like pitching at the batter during the Italy game? No, because it didn't happen.  Canada got whooped.  period.  Tourney rules. Unspoken rules get trumped when spoken rules are in place.  It never feels very sporting to over run a team to humiliation, but it is very sporting to take your lumps when they happen, and learn from it instead of behaving like 5 year olds.  The rules aren't to blame in any of these runaway game situations, everyone knew them coming in.  People having a fit because the rule no longer fits their perception of how things aught to be is.

USA vs CAN

Umpires: PU: Brian Knight. U1: Jim Reynolds. U2: Michael Ulloa. U3: Miguel Hernandez.

Roof and OF panels open.

GORGEOUS day for baseball!

Posted

MLB.com GameDay is about 10 seconds ahead of the game. Kinda' cool to see what the pitch is, location, and result on the PC, then see it happen on TV. The "Scout" on it is pretty observant... "Holland is having trouble locating his sinker."

Japan. But if I get some great games and heavy drama (not involving umpires), I'll be happy!

Got home from work in the top of the 8th! Glad I got home in time to see the good stuff.  :yippie:  :beerbang

Nice job USA! Now let's get out of the second round for once!

Now for what could be the Game Of The Day: The battle of the islands! Dominican Republic vs. Puerto Rico in San Juan. Both are already in Round 2, but when these two get together...

Posted

I might just have to add a big baseball game in San Juan, PR to my bucket list. What a party!
