NFHS Rules:

I had this happen in a JV game today:

R1 and R2, BR Hits a double, R2 scores, R1 is 5 feet away from third base when on an overthrow to third the pitcher picks up the overthrow from left field with the ball just outside of the dugout but has one foot inside the dugout and BR just before second base.

What do you have?

T-Rav,

Under NFHS rules, the fielder is not considered to have entered dead ball territory until BOTH feet enter DBT or he falls into DBT. I've got a live ball, play on.

mjr,

If a fielder enters DBT with possession of the ball but the ball remains "over" LBT, it's still a dead ball.

The principle you cite is for fair/foul, NOT LBT/DBT.

I should have been more specific than "player", but wouldn't what I said still hold true when you add the needed two feet?

Depends on what the pitcher does next.

No it wouldn't.  It's about the players feet and/or body control in the DBT.

As JM pointed out the principle you are thinking of would apply to determination of fair/foul, i.e. where is the ball located DBT or LBT when touched.  For the determination of a live or dead ball and the awards that would go along with those scenario's you have to determine where the players feet are, or if there was a loss of body control into dbt.

T-Rav, as usual JM provided the answer to the question.  There are differences between the major codes though.

Thanks, JM, MJR, and NFUA, I got the awards or lack there of right but my reasoning was wrong. Live and learn...

Can you please tell me what rule # states you the two feet must be in DBT, I would like to let my partner know.

I don't have an NFHS Manual or UM handy, but my BRD is out in the car, I will try and take a peek and let you know.

Since you're talking Fed, let's keep it strictly Fed. As I have previously stated in another thread, F/F is the antithesis if LBT/DBT. F/F is strictly based on location of the ball, foot placement notwithstanding. LBT/DBT takes into account the location of the feet, ball location notwithstanding.

Concerning Fed LBT I concur wholeheartedly with Yoda (as usual).

Look in the case book under 2-Catch.  THer's a lenghty (3 or 4 paragraphs if I recall correctly) about the feet position for a catch and for carrying the ball out of play.  They are slightly different.

That's good to know. I called 3 tourney games and we had something like this come up and it sounds like we got it wrong.

I was calling with one of the top guys in our association too.

F5 caught a foul pop up down third base line. He then ended up taking a step into the dugout, just 1 foot I think.

Partner as PU killed it and awarded 1 base on the catch and carry. I didn't know it had to be both feet. Will get that right next time.
