The ladies slo-pitch league that we do is into the playoffs. You have to remember that this is a FUN league. Well the scorekeeper for the Red team is questioning every close and not so close call. He is loud enough to be heard all over. I politely told him that I am the umpire and that I was quite capable of making the calls and would he please keep his remarks to himself. I may as well have been talking to one of the bats, as he kept it up. I then told him that was enough and to cut it out. By this time things are getting pretty intense with both teams starting to get a bit chippy. Red team player hits a ground ball to F4 which is bobbled, BR beats the throw. However the BR steps on the white base instead of the orange safety base so I call her out. Mr Scorekeeper says in a voice for all to hear "Instead of blue shirt you should be wearing a green shirt." I had enough, I strolled over to the team area and informed the manager that she needed a new scorekeeper. Oddly enough she said I don't blame you. Mr Loudmouth said I had to leave anyway I have to go to work. Yeah right. He left and the game calmed down from that point on and we had no more incidents. Only downside is we had to go 10 innings to get a winner.

How wrong is it when the guy that is doing the scorebook is also the same guy that umpires with your organization? Good toss. I hate listening to that as well. but i've developed selective hearing in the 4.5 years i've umpired :D

YES!!! I get to be first on the, "the problem is you are calling rec ball" bitch out!!! doncha know you shouldn't umpire low level rec games.... sorry, I tried to keep a straight face while saying it.... couldn't do it. Can't tell you how many posts I've seen that went along those whole lines of doing rec ball is a cardinal sin of some sort. It really is amazing how a single person is capable of effecting the game like that though isn't it? While generally speaking I am of the mind that spectators are untouchable, they are after all in a public park, I have no qualms about using the coach to deal with the unruly sorts outside of the field. I've yet to come across a coach who isn't happy to deal with one of their spectators when I've asked them to do something about someone who is being a large distraction to the game. No need to use the ultimatum of tossing the coach if they don't do something about it yet, that is just confrontational and not going to get you anywhere yet. If things get down to brass tacks, then perhaps it's time to pull out the "big guns"

Maybe not a cardinal sin, but something along the lines of "asking for trouble" variety. And the younger the age, the better the odds of idiocy, generally. (Thing is, I work all kinds of rec games, because there's not enough of the HS-and-up to go around where I've worked. You work it, but you have to ready for more, er, hi-jinks, than other levels.)

I mean, I get it: slo-pitch needs umpires because the teams would end up spending their time arguing, so it's better to give them a neutral person to gang up on dispute calls with than each other. But honestly, those games call themselves.

I had a chance, simply because my baseball season is so short, to work the slo-pitch games here at my air base. But I decided I'd rather sit at home and miss out than work those games. I told the guy that assigns them I would help if needed, but only then.
