If, with a runner on third base and trying to score by means of a squeeze play or a steal, the catcher or any other fielder steps on, or in front of home base without possession of the ball, or touches the batter or his bat, the pitcher shall be charged with a balk, the batter shall be awarded first base on the interference and the ball is dead.

Ok, ...

So, I see the balk (obr, balks are live), but it says the ball is dead, and no one can advance on a dead ball ..... so, does R3 score?

Thanks

The ball is "Delayed Dead" (aren't we all). If B4 hits a home run, everyone scores.

Just like with any CI or Balk, play it out until the defense secures the ball in the infield or it is apparent no one will advance any further, during which time the runners may advance beyond the bases to which they are protected.

yep

Concur, but ...no one can advance on a dead ball, right? :)

Wrong. 5.09 (from memory so that might not be quite right) has a list if items where the ball is dead and runners advance and there are others elsewhere in the book.

So you can't advance on a home run?

A review of 5.02 is in order.

5.02 After the umpire calls “Play†the ball is alive and in play and remains alive and in

play until for legal cause, or at the umpire’s call of “Time†suspending play, the ball

becomes dead. While the ball is dead no player may be put out, no bases may be run and no

runs may be scored, except that runners may advance one or more bases as the result of acts

which occurred while the ball was alive (such as, but not limited to a balk, an overthrow,

interference, or a home run or other fair ball hit out of the playing field).

the balk call is a matter of score keeping , you cant have CI and a balk at the same time . one had to happen first , so the balk is scoring the run as earned on the pitcher , instead of unearned . enforce the CI .

This is a catcher's INT rule dealing with R3 attempting to score via steal or squeeze. When CI occurs, any runner attempting to steal a base is awarded that base and the batter is awarded first. In this rule, the additional penalty of a balk being called advances other runners not attempting to steal. This rule only comes into play with R2R3 and a squeeze attempted with R2 staying at 2nd. R3 scores and batter awarded 1st on CI, R2 awarded 3rd on the balk.
