The other reason for not allowing a rulebook on the field is many times you have to piece multiple rules together to get an answer. Also sometimes you need an interp book to clarify something. That would involve to much time and some guys aren't good at getting the exact section out of the rulebook under pressure which makes him look bad. So even an electronic copy will get you tossed.

The ONLY way I will be willing to look at anything on the field is if the coach/manager politely asks if he can show me, or if he can look it up and we can discuss between innings. ONLY THEN would it be ok.

This, in my opinion is a HTBT situation ....if he's being an a$$ dump him...

Manager announces a protest.

Would you look it up then or insist on waiting?

where I call, mgr can't just "announce" a protest. He has to put $300 cash in my hand to file his protest. I've only had 1 in my career. No $ no prottest. Win the protest, get your $ back. Lose, and it goes in the gate box.

$300 for a protest? What age and kind of league is this?

I think if the Umpire is correct and the protest is nullified, the crew should split it as a bonus for knowledge right there on the field in front of the coach. That would be sweet. Thanks coach. Here's a couple pairs of polywools ON YOU! :P
