It was an accident to hit the umpire. I'm sure of that especially with how quick he reacted to come back and check on the umpire.

Nevertheless, it was uncalled for. This is why so many need to learn to control themselves. Once they let go of the equipment, they don't know where it may go. Just ask Bryce Harper during a game against the Phillies (I think). He strikes out with no cut above his eye but comes from the dugout with one. He slammed his bat in the dugout and his bat said "Oh yeah, you SOB!" What an idiot.

That kind of stuff happes A LOT. If you don't "get it" then you neved played a game at a serious enough level.

Maybe I'm missing something. How was this an accident? Was he trying to hit the umpire somewhere other than in the head? Throw it on the field to make a statement, like throwing bats on the field from the dugout? What did he think was going to happen when he released that helmet? Yes, he came to check on the umpire after he hit him, but I read it as more of an "Oh sh**, I can't believe I really just did that" reaction than actually checking on the umpire. More of a "Boy am I in trouble now, please don't tattle on me" reaction.

I kind of have to agree with Maineac here. Pissed off HC throws his helmet toward the dugout, or better yet, takes his EJ like a man and hands the helmet to the AC who is going to take his place in the coaches box. He just walked away from the BU and then threw his helmet in that direction...what did he think was going to happen? I did not read anywhere regarding any injury to BU, but what if the bill hits BU in the eye? I am sure he was contrite following the incident, but actions have consequences. Three days is weak.

And speaking of actions/consequences - BH and others need to control their anger regardless of the "magnitude" of the game. How many pitchers have been pulled and injured themselves due to childlike antics in the dugout or clubhouse? We have all coached competitors who displayed their frustration at being unsuccessful one time or another. Being pissed at oneself for failing to deliver is one thing, throwing a temper tantrum is quite another, thus exposing yourself (or a teammate) to possible injury. The hardest thing these kids need to learn is to put failure in sports behind them and not carry it out onto the field to further affect their play. Role models who beat the crap out of water coolers, punch walls and slam bats into bat racks so hard it requires stitches, does not make that job any easier. Don't get me wrong, I will take a kid who shows "fire" any day and does not accept sub-par performance, but this game is a game of failure, the "best" deal with it and put it behind them.

I was wondering when this board was going to pick this one up. This is a local thing for me. He is a new manager this year and seems a bit more fiery than the previous guy.

It was an accident to hit the umpire, but he had to know that it was going to end up pretty close to him when he threw it. He had just turned his head to walk away and he knew exactly where the umpire was.

Looked like he tried to get at the umpire for quiet a while in the original argument with his partner blocking him away. This was not just a small argument to start with. He continuously tried to get at the PU before finally walking away with his partner and then plunking his partner with the helmet. If he really cared about his actions, he would penalize himself an additional 3 days (which would double the time of the original League sentence and which he could easily do) since he did contact the partner with thrown equipment, not just verbal abuse with restraint by the partner.

IMO, it doesn't matter. Equipment that he intentionally threw, hit an umpire.

You should be a MLB pitching headhunter. Slipped is the number 1 excuse in the book.

Just busting on you. I did not think it looked like a slip and wished he had received a longer sentence. Oh well.
