Hey GBR, a question about the "jumping ump video" on the facebook link

Is that some kind of LL mechanic that calls for U3 to start inside fair territory instead of foul?

Looks to me like he was trying to get a better view. Almost messed him up.

In order to properly see check swing, in this case, U3 should at min straddle the line. In this case, he came in with two feet fair...which is okay, but not preferred.

I'm ok with what the Umpire did. You have to be able to see it to call it.

IMHO the R3 was blocking the UMPS view so he did what he had to do.

I've never done that, never had the need. I've never had a problem seeing everything because of a runner. I've angled myself and it's always worked, I just do the same thing as on the big diamond.

Nice job on the site.

I've never worked 3-4 man mechanics so I can't say how it is.

I'm just saying how I can see how his view may have been blocked by looking at the video.

Straddle or fair is where you should start in three or four man. I took a foul ball in the shin by being foul years ago.

We have always been taught to start in FOUL territory when in D or A. I Don't have the CCA handy but we are in foul territory in all of the 3-man juco/college games that I have ever done. The MLB Umpire Manual indicates foul territory for 4-man and PBUC indicates foul for 3-man.

Did a quick search for LL 3-man and 4-man and most sources I saw indicated foul territory. I do not have a "official" source to back up the LL positioning so I'll just assume you are talking about LL mechanics when you say straddle the line or start in fair territory. I would think if you are going to get hit, it would be much better for it to be a foul ball (knock on wood, I've never taken a shot down either line).

with R3 U3 can if he chooses to stand straddling or have his right foot inside the line, this is also a CCA mechanic. that way U3 gets a better look at check swings, fair balls, bunts that can touch the batter..any crazy stuff like that.

But to answer no this is not just a LL thing.. big leagues do it too.
