I started my weight loss journey on September 6, 2011. At the time, my weight was the highest it had ever been. I worked a high level state championship game the month before, I felt slow, tired (exhausted) and I hated how I looked in photos. I never ever again want to been known as 'the big umpire' as I want to be known as the consistant or fair or hustling umpire. At that time I weighed 288 lbs. I started weight watchers and have lost 22.5% of my starting weight, weighing in at 222 lbs. as of today. I stil would like to shed 20 more lbs...but hit my first three goals....10% 15% and 20%....25% is just around the corner, hoping to get there by July or August (or maybe sooner).

I'm not going to walk off the field, but I have two maybe three EJs here, certainly F1 and F2. Maybe a manager if I knew or thought it came from there....

JnLeClair, Hits one of the bags, it's fair. Says so right there in the rule tiger posted. First hits the ground beyond the infield, it's also fair - says so in the same rule. Are you suggesting the fence is the same as a base or the ground? Or something else? JM

It's beyond first base so it's where it hits first. Rich, First hits what? JM Tiger, I've read that. Re-read it quite recently. JM How about a batted ball hitting a bag....fair? Yes. A batted ball striking a the wall is no different. At or beyond the bag, first touch fair = fair ball.

Actually, my buddy who works in the minor leagues told me Saturday that the ball park set up was going to be addressed....

This is the ONLY possible explanation as if it did hit the wall fair and leave the park prior to the pole it MUST be ruled a two base award.....this is similar to those parks in local leagues where the pole is on the inside of the fence....deflects fair out of play, HR . Deflects to the "foul" side after striking the pole, two bases. Deflects back into play, play it like a wall.

Rich, Believe it or not, I've actually read 7.08(f). While I agree that it does not explicitly say "how or by what", I believe the proper interpretation is that the "deflection" must be by a "person", as legally defined in the rules. Plus, why do you think it was a "fair ball"? (Yes, I've read that rule as well.) JM A2D on the deflection. It hit an object other than a fielder while fair - it's fair This is exactly why I say fair, two base award. The ball deflected off the way, at "first touch" it was fair (from the only camera shot we have). If you have ever seen this pole and the wall in person, you would know the angle and way the wall is painted (with a fair stripe) is not be accident...this is a cluster of a wall and pole. The only thing I can say regarding the interpretation of what happened is they judged it did not strike the wall or the pole, leaving the field / crossing the fence boundary "in flight" and foul....

I believe thats just the camera angle. If the plate is improperly placed, is it still fair? If the line is drawn crooked, is it not fair if the ball rests on the line? Got to play with what we have.

Agree....should have been a two base award. The major question though is, could this have been protested? IMHO the answer is no, since it was ruled foul and being a judgment call, it is not reversible via protest. IMHO the rule was improperly interpreted, obtuse or right angle aside (it amazes me that a Scotts advertisement takes persistence over having the field properly marked, then again, revenue makers seem to outweigh proper field markings).

In last evenings Red Sox game, a RF Pole shot was original called fair, for a HR. After Umpire replay....the ball was ruled foul. This still shot and video seem to indicate, the originally call IMHO was partially correct and partially incorrect, as the ball seemed to strike the top of the wall (fair) only to leave the park prior to (or not touching )the pole. Since it did not appear to hit, touch, glance, or pass by the pole in fair territory, but struck the wall in fair territory..... I think the initial ruling of fair was correct, but it should have been a double. Since the replay had the batted ball called foul, thus not allowing any protest to have occurred on the call. I've been thinking about this one all day. Anyone else like to chime in? Pesky Pole Foul Ball?

Also subject on some of the O/C shirts....buttons that turn color after 15 washes, etc....

A friend of mine is living and dying by this old resin mask. i do have to hand it to him, it is pretty darn strong. He bought it over ten years ago after seeing it in action . Former MLB umpire Eric Gregg was demonstrating its superior strength at a clinic near Philadelphia. Eric's words meant nothing compared to his actions.....he placed the mask on the floor of the stage and jumped on top of the mask as it was sitting face up on he floor. The mask held up and whoever was hawking masks at the equipment table that day made enough money selling them to probably retire. Anyhow, the pads in his mask have seen it's last season.. Does any one know what pads would fit this old thing?

I wont buy any Smitty Product again after my incounter with their plate and base slacks last year....very poor materials with even worse construction. Not worth the discount.

In order to properly see check swing, in this case, U3 should at min straddle the line. In this case, he came in with two feet fair...which is okay, but not preferred.

I am a little disapointed with umpire equipment outfits and charcoal becoming a primary color. It seems that charcoal and outfitters idea of what charcoal is varies significantly. I recently purchased the Smitty flex fits, a second friend ordered from Honigs, a third has had his from Gerry Davis since they came out and a fourth and fifth friend has ordered from Officials' Choice. Not one of these brands match when you hold them side by side. The smittys seem cheeply made, I have had several issues with them including a hole developing near the inseam by the zipper and an expander falling apart (it was held by one stitch). The Davis pants appear to have a green tint, the officials choice pants a very dark, almost black. The honigs seem to be the same quality as always, very solid yet they have to be dry cleaned. What gives? Can't they get a little closer to matching. I think it looks terrible having all these different shades on the field.

Using the Davis Stance last May in a HS District Playoff game, I took a foul straight off my wrist, within seconds, i had a golf ball on my wrist, two mintues later, I had a baseball sized goonie. I took about 5 weeks for the pain and swelling to finally go away, luckily some prescription medicine took away the swelling. SIDE note, it was my left wrist, so i had to try the anti indicator hand.....after one batter, i said forget it and went to no indicator.
