I'm a Phillies fan and all, but this crap really ticks me off. If it wasn't for this guy and a lot others like him, his ass would be working in a factory somewhere instead of playing baseball for a living. So what if he tried to catch a foul ball for his kid, it was in the stands, get over it.Just like Alou and that play in Chicago a few years ago in the playoffs. That guy was getting death threats. MLB needs to put a small area between the field and the seats if they don't want this to happen.

Hopefully, he doesn't get the same treatment as the Chicago guy. I heard that guy had to move b/c of the threats.

I agree. Werth needs to calm down. I understand being competitive but that is ridiculous. Take it out on the other team. If the ball is in the stands, it is the fans ball. It becomes his job to take it from the fan first. Not the other way around. There were about 5 others waiting to catch that ball. And, so many others wishing they had that guy's seat to do the same.

MLB players need to realize who pays their salary. It isn't MLB. Without the fans, there is no MLB.

I can understand Werth's frustration, he wanted the easy out and couldn't get it. But the ball was on the fan's side of the rail.

But to cuss a fan is not right at any level.

If the Phillies are smart they'll at least fine Werth.

Probably not gonna happen. But, I think he owes a signed baseball to that guy b/c this may have caused him some flak from it. He needs to show there is no hard feelings after the fact.

And, people think the umpires have an ego issue. :shakehead:

This was a major "code" violation that in the old days said to give a wide birth to the home team on any ball near the stands and not try and catch the ball, but to crowd the stands if it was the opposing team in the same situation. Many old fans knew of this "code" rule. However, the new generation, just like the newer generation players that stand and watch their home runs, does not appear to have heard of this old code, or maybe just had a brain cramp.

Not trying in the above paragraph to support anything one way or the other and not condoning Werth's comments toward the fan either. On another note, if you do not want your family to hear the words Mr. Werth and many players use, do not sit near the field or behind or beside the dugouts or bullpen. It will keep you from having to explain some things you may not want to explain. However, you may just hear the same from a fan or two also.

Bingo. Any time I've had the opportunity to that close to the field, I've reminded the people with me of this "rule." I'd like to think that in the same situation, I'd be yelling to everyone: "Get out of the way! Let him catch it!"

About 2 years ago, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were sitting in the first row at Fenway, next to the dugout. He took a ball from Varitek, and had to leave the ballpark, the fans were on him so much...
