I got a great compliment this morning. A co-worker was on an adjacent field last night. He knew I was doing a U10 game. He said I looked like a major league umpire out there. Not my skills, just my appearance. I told him that was the goal. I got that going for me. Made me feel good.

good job!

Remember they "see you before they hear you"....... a good first impression that you are a professional squared away umpire will go a long way..........as you found out...

Posted

Yeah, sometimes that is the difference in someone's perception that a "good umpire is having a bad day" vs. "that guy is awful, he doesn't have a clue out there" :jerkit:

Absolutely, ...before ANYTHINGS happens ,....you look sharp=you know what you're doing.

First impressions are so important. Unfortunately, only a couple guys in our org get that, but a lot are quite a bit younger.....

But the bigger issue is that if you don't "look the part" you may call a great game but people will still remember that you had shinguards over your wrinkled dirty pants, and that your cap was on backwards under your mask :jerkit:

When I was working the T-Ball game the other night one of the little guys ask me. "Blue, are you a real umpire? Do you have a Plate Brush?"

I loved it!

Yup - Our LL District UIC tells the new guys every year - "If you come onto the field looking sharp, it takes them two or three innings to figure out you don't know s#!t"

If you've ever done the CDP thing with Scoot up there, he said it best....change the inning count to reflect the length of your game;

"if you walk onto the field looking SHARP [scoot is more colorful]....they don't bother you for 2 or 3 innings....

If you hustle...and I don't mean FALSE hustle...on each play....they don't bother you for another 2 or 3 innings...

If you SELL THE SH*T out of the close calls.....they don't bother you for another 2 or 3 innings...

How many innings do you play?

Fooled them again...."

I've always loved that little bit of a story....but it does all start with the appearance part of it....always does!

Compliments are always good to get.

I think the best compliments we can get is based on our previous reputation with a team or a league.

To show up to a game site, sitting at your car preparing and having coaches or players (Adult Players) come up to say glad to see you today using your name and not just Blue. Hope your working the plate today? I always take that as a compliment.

The best compliments come when you get calls or are approached to work games for another organization. That is true test that shows what your doing on the field is noticed.

SO TRUE! I remember a few weeks ago coming up to a game and the coach had just finished helping get the field prepared because it had been raining. He looks up and says, ..."you guys got this game?" We replied, yes sir, ...and he says with a big smile ....

"SWEEET!!" :2cents:

Always nice to hear!

We had a majors tourney this past week and weekend. On friday we did 3 man and on saturday and sunday did 4 man. The kids were all big google-eyed. "Wow, we got 4 umps!". Everybody was well behaved-no rats, and it was a great time!

Yep. The other is when you get the new umpire and the UIC tells him "he's the best I've got."
