Wow!! My favorite part was when the girl said that we wouldn't do it on July 4th. Well A) You're not going to be in school on July 4th, so I doubt the school will be able to suspend you for it if you did, and :rollinglaugh: do you think we'll really care if you wore a Mexican flag on your shirt on a day that we celebrate to declare our independence from Great Britian (Not to put any Englishmen down if there are any out there)? I just love how society has became so much in need to protect everyone from being hurt.

Did the principal take the American Flag down from in front of the school on May 5th?

NO!!!??? Well suspend him without pay til he takes it down and puts up a Mexican Flag so as to extinguish this "incindiary" situation. Press 1

Cinco de Mayo is a MEXICAN holiday, last I checked, the US was not part of MEXICO.

My thoughts are that if you emigrate to a different country, it is your responsibility to assimilate yourself into that countries customs - and learn the language spoken there. I don't care if it's Mexicans coming to the US or Americans emigrating to Tokyo, if you want to live there, you need to assimilate.

If that had been my kid sent home from school, I'm gonna be a rich man after I sue the school district and win for violating my son's first amendment rights.

And see, that's my new questions. Are schools becoming poor due to the large amount of kids, or are schools becoming poor due to all the high-priced lawyers they are having to hire to protect their sorry @$$e$ in these civil lawsuits.

Don't give these kids too much credit -- there is Summer school!

Before I go on my rant, I'd like to say that I don't think the whole story is being told. I honestly think the kids wore the shirts for a reason, not by accident. Whether they meant harm is a different story, but their statements in the article suggest they were doing it on purpose. Now, I don't care if they were doing it on purpose. Last I checked, we were in the USA.

There are some problems with this story that make no sense at all:

First of all, Cinco de Mayo is celebrating Mexico's victory over France (no surprise -- someone defeating France)! Why would the kids care if someone wore an American flag?

Secondly, it's not even celebrating their independence, which is celebrated on September 16. In fact, Cinco de Mayo is basically celebrated in one Mexican state. It's similar to Texas celebrating the victory at the Alamo. Equating this to July 4 is comparing apples to oranges.

Thirdly, how are the kids "disrespecting" the Mexican kids? Were they going around saying "Viva la France!" or "We still took over your city!" Most likely not. They were, according to the story, simply wearing the American flag.

Lastly, I don't think the Mexican kids realize their school is located in the United States. If they did, they would respect the kids that wore the American flag. After all, it's still the flag of the country you're living in and, most likely, are the citizen of. Get over it.

The school board has stated they're against the school's actions. You'd probably have to go after the administrators that approached the children and made them leave. You might get a few grand -- teachers don't make a whole lot of money.

Teacher's do not, but school administrators do. I know that our previouse superintendents made somewhere between $100,000-$250,000 per year.

Good point - so I'll change that to, I'll own the vice principal's house, car, and bank account!!!!!! Not so much because I want any of those things, but rather to make an example of the fact that crap like this needs to stop. If the the Mexican-Americans want to celebrate a Mexican holiday, it's their right and more power to them, but DO NOT try to force Americans to celebrate a minor, localized holiday from another country.

For me, May 5th is a Wednesday in 2010, and is the day after May 4th and the day before May 6th.

When my grandparents came to America (legally), they learned English, learned American customs and became American citizens. THAT is the model that needs to be followed.

Kids still wouldn't be school - July 4th is an AMERICAN national holiday - schools, banks and gov't offices all are closed, as are many private sector businesses.

The Texans didn't win that one Santa Anna really kicked their @$$ only 2 Texan survivors...

Otherwise I think it's crap but it is San Francisco. You couldn't pay me to live there.

Well, I guess since they were in school for "their" holiday, it's only fair they go to school on "our" holiday. :)
