Break it up!

Fed rules: R1, ground ball to F4. As R1 goes in to second, the 1B coach yells, "Break it up!" If indeed R1 takes out the F6 in violation of FPSR, would you consider running the coach (in addition to enforcing FPSR)?

I would not. There are ways for the runner to comply with the force play slide rule, execute a legal slide and in doing so "break up" the double play. That could be exactly what the coach meant. Running a coach in this circumstance for coaching his player in this way will leave you holding the sh:censored:ty end of the stick. If the kid violates the FPSR just get your 2 outs and move forward.

For just yelling "Break it up." I've got nothing on the coach. Possibly a different story if he says "Take him out!" and the player does something illegal.

What are the legal way to break up a double play?

In Fed, there is no way to "break up" a double play. There are two things a runner can do, slide straight to the bag and stay down until the ball is thrown past him or abandon himself away from the play after he is called out.

If the fielder is on or in front of the bag then you can certainly slide into him to break up the DP. If he is behind or beside the bag then there nothing to be done.

Perfectly stated. Executing a legal slide into the space that a fielder is occupying in front of or on the bag is a way to break up a double play without violation.

Interestingly enough, I had read this thread, then went to a ballgame later that day where the coach told R1 on his way to second "Break it up!" No EJ, but I don't think the runner was fast enough to do it anyway.
