IMO it would appear absolutely intentional. However,based on what I read, I am not sure that anyone involved handled this very well before or after the "event"

This story is incomplete. Was there some history in the game? Did they not like some calls? Without that, there is no way to make an assumption of it being deliberate. Also, it says youth baseball. Is this HS or lower? Hard to say it isn't a case of mix up with F2 who can't adjust otherwise.

It looks like F2 didn't like the pitch before call. But, F2 wasn't the greatest back there either. He couldn't handle a straight fastball that hit his glove.

Without knowing more, I won't make a judgment on it either way.

In video footage obtained by The Star, the play in which Reynolds was hit by the pitch occurs in the bottom of the fifth. The right-handed pitcher walks an opposing hitter, bringing up a right-handed batter. The first pitch lands inside, and Reynolds calls a ball. The next pitch appears more centrally located around the strike zone, but the catcher drops it and Reynolds calls ball two.

“Hey, man, don’t penalize him because I dropped it!†the coach recalled the catcher telling Reynolds, believing the pitch was ruled a ball because the catcher couldn’t hang on to it.

In the video, Reynolds does not respond. The catcher can be seen reacting to the call by placing his hands on his hips and pausing for five seconds before tossing the ball back to the pitcher. The catcher said he then asked where the pitch had been, and Reynolds said he replied: “It was rolling around the freakin’ ground.â€

After tossing the ball back to the pitcher, the catcher turns his head to the left, toward the third-base dugout and the head coach, who is sitting on a bucket outside the dugout. The catcher then briefly pulls up his mask, spits and again looks over to his left. On the next pitch, the catcher shifts to his right knee just before the ball reaches home plate and strikes Reynolds’ left wrist.

I disagree w/the section of that article that said the catcher moved just before the ball got there. The catcher moved as soon as the pitcher threw the ball - well in advance of being able to tell where the ball was going.

I am 100% certain the catcher did this intenttionally; I'm not sure about the pitcher.

Also, after watching again, F2 doesn't appear to be in any hurry to get the ball. Also, based on how long it took PU to come out, did F2 say something to tip him off?

It does look like F2 never gave the pitch a chance as Dragon points out. I don't think the pitcher did as he has been off for a couple of pitches. But, given how F2 didn't seem to like a call and seemed to have words with PU, I believe it was intentional on F2's part without a question.

I just can't believe how ignorant others are other than the F2. Some of those comments are pathetic towards this umpire and umpires in general. It is dangerous of what F2 did. And, it is one thing to get hit accidentally but to do it intentionally is pathetic. Wanting to cause bodily harm to someone deserves criminal charges. I'm glad the PU recognized it however he did and will hopefully follow through and press charges. I hope this kid loses any chance at a scholarship if he had hopes of one like the one who pulled the incident in GA last year or the year before. It seems these kids are ridiculously out of control.

Even if it might have broke your hand? And, the police need to be contacted immediately, not 2 hours from then. Waiting makes it look worse for the one who files the complaint. Better to handle it then and delay the game. Than to wait and let doubt set in to anyone's mind. Plus, get them while everyone is still present to get the names from the coach if the offenders have left already. The coach isn't going anywhere until the game is declared over. Doing it now ensures someone with contact info is available to the police now.
