Well now that the off-season is here (or almost here for some) it is time to make sure that after I squat down for my first game next season I am still able to stand back up after that first pitch. What do you do to keep in shape in the off season?

Is "flabby" a shape? :angel4:

Seriously, though, this is an excellent off-season topic. As of the moment, I haven't begun an off-season conditioning program, but I found that I definitely need to after a couple days of hunting last week, trudging through snow and thick underbrush. It's a good thing I was only carrying a 30-30... I held & then shot my cousin's .308 - man, that thing was heavy! My legs were so-so after the weekend, but my shoulders were screaming! :banghead:

So I plan to institute a weight training program - a light weight/high reps plan, maybe 2 days a week, then building to 3 or 4. That will be augmented by basic calisthenics and stretching.

In addition, I plan to use the exercise bike every day. We have a programmable bike, so I can vary the type of workout. The goal is to get my weight down to 165 pounds. I'm at 184 today. That's too heavy for my frame. :(

I plan to start on December 1.... hopefully by the time our trip to Florida works out (IF it works out), I'll be ready to hit the field in great shape by Feb. 26. :HD:

My workout for the winter is some high rep low weight programs. My wife bought me a treadmill ( maybe she is telling me something ) and alot of walking in the woods and the neighborhood. I have had some hip pain the last few weeks of fall ball and football. Has anyone had this and what did they do as far as excercise for this? I am currently 230 but I have a thick frame. Would like to get to 210. Brian, what were yu hunting for and did you have any sucess?

In the off season I like to keep in shape by officiating HS basketball. Its any easy way to get your running in and you get paid! Plus its a lot of fun for me.

And of course I go to the local gym and lift some weights

We were hunting white tail deer in Maine. Saw a few piles of pellets, and some buck markings on trees and in the mud, along with some tracks of what appeared to be a large animal, but we saw absolutely nothing. We even saw a few piles of moose droppings, so the bull(s) might have been scaring off the bucks. :angel4: Still, it was a great extended weekend, as I hadn't been in the woods in 30+ years.

The following weekend the guys spotted either a very large buck or a moose, but nothing clear enough to determine what it really was (shooting a moose would have meant jail time, so they passed).

I went to the Dr. this week and I was 230. I need to run more in the off season. I didn't nearly as much soccer this year and that is done except an allstar game. I plan to hit the gym some this winter but don't have a plan yet.

Guys, Did some cardio today rode exercise bike for 15 min then eliptical trainer for 12 min, a bit of shoulder press and bench with only about 100 lbs. I have had 5 knee surgerys and am not much of a distance runner so "road work" is out for me. I ride the bicycle at least 3 times a week if I can, the eliptical is new and I like it but my calves are sore and feel tight. I feel the legs are where its at, plate work or base work require us to run and squat so keeping the leg muscles in shape is my priority. We had two umps in our area blow achilles tendons this year so stretching is also important, I do calf and heel stretches every time I work out. We have a city gym designed for firefighters that is free for employees, I used to be a huge YMCA guy and I love swimming but the costs for a family membership are about $100 a month now and too much for our budget and I gave up membership last spring. The city facility is OK and has good free weights but I miss the pool, steam room and sauna! I think as we age, concentrate on stretches and maintain a lighter weight workout for tone and flexibility not bulk and raw strength, the legs are the key for me!

Officiating basketball is my exercise. I need a break by the time the end of February rolls around.

I can't put weight on if I try, so I don't really have to worry about it.

Let me guess: you're single and under 30 years old.

That was me - then. I could eat silly and not exercise at all, and I stayed right at 145-150 pounds.

Then: Marriage. Turn 35. Have a desk job. The pounds began to pile up over the years, and I hardly noticed.

Then, 10 years in the marriage, we have a baby. (We're late bloomers ;) )

During SWMBO's pregnancy, I bought a bathroom scale (who needed one before? )

I try it out. Naw, that can't be right... reset it to zero, and step on it again.

:(

:agasp_:

198 pounds.

On a body built for 150.

So over the span of about 10 years, I'd put on nearly 50 pounds, and most of that came during the wife's pregnancy.

Hey, I was eating for three!

I'm going to try again to break the 200lb mark. I have a treadmill which hardly gets used a Wii Fit, bike and more I need to get back into working out and stretching too, I'm at my least limber ever.

Close. Married and under 30.

I imagine in the next few years it will be tougher to keep from gaining weight, but right now it isn't a problem.

I would suggest using your current pant size as your indicator. When you need to really start sucking in the gut just to button your pants, then you have arrived in the "weight gain" zone. Don't blame the pants, and don't wait an extra 10 years like I did (more like 15, to be honest) to start doing something about it. Most everyone's metabolism changes with the years.

Me, too.

Wait. You mean breaking 200 in a downward trend, don't you??

Never mind.
