What's in the pants

Okay I maybe opening myself up for some blue bashing, but here go's.Besides looking the same as your partner and having a sharp appearance, what's the difference between umpire pants and some nice gray casual pants? :clap:

Well you want to match your partner as closely as possible so you and your partner should both be wearing either heather or charcoal. Also umpire slacks shouldn't be cuffed at the bottom like most more casual pants. Many times the belt hoops will not be large enough for a proper belt. 1 1/2" in about the minimum width for a belt. Umpire pants are also cut a bit differently to be able to move easier.

Now plate plants are a completely different story. They need to be cut extra large in the legs for your shin guards, and they are saddle stitched to provide extra strength as you go down into your squat numerous times.

Not to mention that umpire pants also have a lot stronger of a connection at the buttons with most having more than one button or having two different kind of button/clasp connections above the zipper. This allows for less of a chance of losing a button in the middle of a game and then having to pray that your belt and zipper keep yourself unexposed.

No bashing necessary. Many a new umpire has worn Sears pants to get started, but umpire pannts are different as already noted above. Plate are the biggest difference with the bigger legs and stitch re-enforcement.

I worked with a guy from a different association in an all-star game a couple of years' ago.

He was so proud of the fact that he'd spent "only" $25 for a pair of slacks at JCPenney... (meanwhile, he's wearing a cap with an MLB logo on it... about $27 for that... )

As we start to walk out to the field, I realize that these "great" pants he's got have little flecks of black mixed in with the gray. I'm guessing he must have bought the whole suit.... Quite frankly, he looked like an idiot - and all for saving "so" much money ... but what makes it worse is that he made his two partners look bad as well (you know, the TEAM concept here).

As previously stated, you should really do what it takes to present a uniform appearance -- - wear what the other guys are wearing. That's why they call what we wear a "uniform". And no, I don't mean we should all run out and buy slacks from JCPenney. :shakehead:

Just want to offer my similar story to the dress pants

We had a guy work a Jr. Legion all-star game (in a MiLB stadium) wear a suit pair of grey dress pants that had a tanish plaid check in them with a dress belt, and his shoes were black sketchers boots with the brown sole. What a goof. This also isn't a one time thing, these are his normal pants, etc.

This guy also thinks he one of the best even though he's a first year guy that barely works JV ball in an association that has many college level umps and HS umps that have worked state championships.

Don't be a fool, wear the proper pants. Dress grey pants are very light compared to even the heather grey. They won't match and you'll be able to tell.

Coaches can and will look at how you dress and present yourself. I know times are hard on some people right now but spend the extra money to represent you, your association and all umpires with the way you look walking on a field. You never get a second chance for that first impression.

What? So his tightie-whities are air conditioned? The important thing is, he's comfortable. :)

I can attest proper attire give people good impressions. I try to dress the best I can for LL, most don't. But, because I do, most people almost assume I'm going to call good and then say they would love for our crew to do every single game.

Judging by the picture, one thing is sure. If you are going to wear regular pants, you better find a matching pair of underwear!!
