If R3 attempts to steal home and is hit by the pitch OUTSIDE the strike zone (LH BR so he has a clear path to the plate) is he out or does he score? I do know that if there are two out and two strikes (which is what happen to me last night) and R3 is hit by pitch in the zone the batter is out and the run does not score but what if the pitch is a ball (like in the other batter's box).

6.05(n) covers the play for "Strike 3" with 2 outs or less than 2 outs. And, apply the same logic for if the pitch is not in the zone except it is not a strike.

I guess F1 had a pretty slow delivery or something. I just don't see how a runner gets to the plate before the pitch unless F1 isn't paying attention. :agasp_:

This is not the same as a HBP on the batter. In that case, they move 1 base if forced.

In this case, this rule applies.

John, Semi-final game home team down one and the Visting F1 is looking to make the last strike of the game. Never look at the kid, I saw him coming due to the LH BR and said to myself "Oh $&!#". The ball was a foot outside and the kid slide right under the pitch. I go "Ball, Safe, the pitch didn't touch the batter." The rat for the vistors goes that hit him and I repeated what I had just said. The Vistor lost 11-10 with runners on 2&3 and a big gump at the plate hits a chopper to F6 who sails the ball over F3 and the winning run crosses the plate, if F6 takes his time and throws I'm still out there.:shrug:

It might be too harsh, depends. Many people work during the day / afternoon, and have no time to look up a rule cited on here until they get home in the evening, or may not have enough time to find it online.

You should be able to find just about anything using google in the same amount of time that it takes to make a post here. I just don't buy the "busy at work excuse". I'm sure we are all busy, but most of us make sure we know the rules, and if something like the op comes up, you can be sure that I'm looking it up as soon as I get to the car, or home.

Being a rules interpreter and a trainer I want my guys to know the rules as well as possible. That said, sometimes you have to string rules together or the answer is in a strange place. Newer guys that aren't familar with looking things up are better off just asking or try looking it up and then ask if they are correct.

I know when I started really learning rules the proper way I would think I understood something and be completely wrong. It is good to try and learn the book and procedures but it isn't always that easy. I would like to have a dollar for every coach or player that starts umpiring that says they didn't realize how much we had to know. They thought they knew the rules but found out they didn't know squat.
