Dead ball is a condition of the ball, time is a way to get it there. While there is really nothing wrong withsaying dead ball, it will get you dinged as you move up. If you go to a clinic taught by minor or major league umpires they will eat you up for saying dead ball. They have a tendency to have burials for the ball. I don't that it's that big a deal but they do.

Welcome TH3.

I have to say, this board has a lot of cammaraderie, but it also is very helpful and very open. Even if I guy brings up something that he has done, and does it damn near perfect and wants to talk about it, if the situation is unique, I will still look at it and go, that might make a bunch of sense and will peruse it.

It is funny, there are other forumns will guys that do a lot of chest beating and will quote book and verse, then I think to myself, how would these guys be in a real game whether 10 years old or college or adults. Sometimes it is just letting off steam by guys, that enjoy this darn thing called umpiring.

The UICs/Pete Booths/MStay are just good guys and have always been helpful and they bring a lot to the table. There are others on other sites, that while USUALLY right, they can be rather arrogant and belittling, but hey look at what we do....take it with a grain of salt and sometimes, you have to send one over there bough too..

Lastly, there are a couple of guys that will run you over and then back up over you, but usually have me in stitches when I see their season is 5 games, and 4 of which are in snowshoes. Thus, I remember the adage in college, if is smells like cologne, leave it alone.

So welcome aboard and it something really bothers you, with what is said here or if it sounds dopey. Let the guy or girl have it, WE are Brothers in Blue and you will find that here very quickly.

I completely agree... 100%, I have gained too much knowledge from this site to let a handfull of "hot-heads" keep me from posting and asking the questions.

Someday someone is going to explain dead ball vs. foul vs. time. Any suggestions?:yippie:

Time is what you say to take a live ball to a dead ball. Foul is a special condition that takes a live ball to a dead ball. If it is away from the plate I say foul which kills the ball. If it is right at the plate, hits the batter's foot, comes off the catcher or hits the bat while the batter is still in the box, I say time, then foul.

This is long way to say there is two states or conditions of the ball, live ball/dead ball. Do you say," Live ball" when you are putting it in play? No, you say," Play!" so when it time to take the ball out of play you shouldn't say," Dead ball" you use time or foul.

My personal favorite is "Un-time!" or "game on!"

I am very glad that I joined this forum. One of my best friends is also on the forum (frenchblue). We are both young umpires who have at least 5 years experience (he has 5 and I have 8). I love responding to posts/questions that people have. i also posted a review about the Western Region Junior Umpire School.

I love this forum and will stay on this for a long time.

What is with the recent spate of people responding to threads that are 2+ months old -- and then not to add much.

Today, there were supposedly 140 new posts for me. But, based on this forum, 120+ of them will really be "old" crap.

Whatever happened to netiquette?

(And, yes, i recognize the irony of me responding to a post that does exactly what i'm complaining about)

For shame!!! LOL

Honestly though, in my case, I was gone from the forums since the end of June for one reason or another. I come back and have to weed through the stuff I want to read and the stuff I dont. Sometimes it just hard to do.
