Ok guys I think we're getting stuck on the HSM vs NOCSAE approved head gear. The reality is the majority of sports stores sell HSM for HS and LL that will fit teenagers and adult size heads. Not many sell the old Rawlings earflap head gear anymore. But thats not the point of this thread. The point is should a LL require and provide full head gear to their JR umpires? Namely the kids who are under the age of 18 for their protection to the same standard as we make catchers? Most of these kids don't have the best mechanics yet and in LL stuff happens thats just odd. And umpires do get hit and need more protection. So do you think a League should require, and provide more protection to JR umps than just the traditional style mask and ball cap?

Ump45 is correct. FED requires a NOCSAE approved mask w/ ear flaps on all catchers. AKA no traditional mask thus leaving you really with just HSM now. Little League does the same for catchers but adds the throat guard. Now His point was since the kids are under the age of 18. Should we as a league provide them with HSM instead of the traditional style that we've all been brought up with? Sorry for not clarifying that in my earlier post. Ok now that being said.... Thoughts?

So last night I was at my local LL board meeting, and we're talking about the Jr Umpires program. We're discussing what we want to do, time lines, budgets, etc. Then one of the lawers on the board brought up an interesting question. Are our Jr umpires..... any kid under 18 years old required to wear a HSM just like they are in HS and JRHI? I can see this issue both ways, but I thought I'd throw it out here for discussion. So what are your thoughts and or concerns either way. Let the fun begin........

I talked to our president tonight and he said we should go and just work out the schedule conflict with our rep. Also do you have the info on Western.....? And finally why aren't you going to the free MLB clinic on Nov 5th? Glad your boys are getting into it. NO!!! change the weekend! Our units mandatory field clinic is on Feb 11th! I want to get a bunch of guys from our unit to go to this.... If its not possible at this point I understand and I will ask our board to see if its possible to change our clinic. Otherwise I'm in a crap shoot.

Yes Sam Holbrook wears a wilson titanium mask. However his aren't doeskin wrap arounds, his are doeskin traditional pads. If it matters to you. Then there you go, enjoy.

All-star makes UA protective gear yes. That being said All-Star has the umpires/blacked out versions exclusive to themselves still. So I'd go with All-Star. just my $0.02

The problem came with the fact that U3 waited so long to call the balk, and that they nullified it in the long run. U3 waited to long to call it, he waited to call it until right before the runner was about to be tagged for the 3rd and out of the inning. Now either way you screw a team. A. You have a balk that wasn't and the run scores and runner to 2nd. Or in B. you reset everyone and the other coach is pissed b/c that was his final out of the inning that you just took away from him. How would you handle this?

Just watching the ALWS on ESPN3 and with runners on the corners F1 does a 3 to 1 pick off move. Pitcher disengages and throws to 2nd base. Runner bites and gets into a pickle. Run down goes on for a few seconds then right before the runner is out, I believe the U3 comes up and kills the play with a balk. Ok no problem so far. Coach comes out and wants help, crew gets together and changes the call? Puts everyone back, and now the other coach is not happy. Because this would have been the 3rd out of the inning. They showed the replay a few times from different angles and the only thing I can see that he might have gotten him on was not clearing the rubber, or going past the 45 degree towards the plate. But would you ever change a balk call like this? Sorry if someone knows how to find or get just this clip it would be helpful I'm just unsure how to do it. The game was on ESPN3 at 8a EST, bottom the 7th 7-2 Hawaii vs. Minnesota. thoughts?

I have been honored by being asked to do the Area Code games at Blair Field in Long Beach CA, Aug 5-10. This is the premier talent showcase for HS athletes that want to go to the MLB. I'm still not sure what my schedule or assignment will be. I know I was given the dates, and times. But at this point I'm just honored to be asked. This just goes to show some of the great umpires in this area (semper, Dix, hickman, and others). Thank you all for your insight. I will keep you posted on the details. Have him do some HDR photography effects on you next. I did it with an awsome sky then stitched it into a HDR umpire photo for our association. It looks pretty sick if its done right.

Ok I agree with you so far. However what is the rule reference for the sleeve not being part of the uniform vs uneven length? B/c now what do you tell a coach when his first pitcher has a "sleeve" not part of the uniform, and the next one has a under armor shirt that is cut at uneven lengths which is part of the uniform.....? That is the root of my question.
