just flunked the test. man that thing is tough! some of the questions are worded worse than the fed test.

that was exactly my question for him. he said that an evaluator needs to be able to see if i am giving the proper signals at the proper time. imo he was just being a butthead. that was the only thing he had for either of us that day.

and i got hit for not making my signals big enough. eval said i need to make them big enough so they can be seen from the stands in case someone is watching me. so now everytime i work with that same partner we make fun of it and could probably land a 747 on home plate.

i was a catcher from my first year of kid pitch till my junior year of high school. i worked three loooong dh in a row and could not move the fourth morning, told my coach i was done catching and he moved me to 1b.

my first game is feb 7. D3 in conway arkansas.

i used to turn and point towards dugout, but had a college assigner tell not to point towards the dugout cause you WILL come across a smart a$$ coach who keeps screaming at you to quit pointing at him. so i started pointing towards the 1st base coach until this summer. was working a tourney and forced myself to go with the hammer was suprised at how comfortable i felt, ended up worknig 3 more tourneys and several mens league games using it and will keep using it.

Don, thats a good camp. i attended 3 yrs ago. got some good games because of it.

not a hs ump but i have 46 juco games scheduled so far, will have more before i'm done.

i actually sewed mine together. couldn't keep the tape where it needed to be. and yes warren i was lurking in the shadows, not trolling. thanks for setting me straight.

haven't gotten anything yet but will be getting the black/polo jacket, davis leg guards, some new tights, a couple of caps and maybe a couple new pairs of davis pants.

from my experience you will have to adjust the bottom of the "y" strap up to make it fit properly. i had the same problem with fit that you seem to be having and this has fixed it for me so far.

that is exactly how i work chief. as long as my feet and knees hold up i too can work 3 in a row.

i use the gerry davis stance. like you said i feel VERY comfortable working from this stance. i have used every stance trying to get comfortable the first time i tried the GD i just knew it was right for me. on another note...this past weekend i started using the hammer on called strikes, i loved it! i've been pointing to the side from day one and have wanted to change but couldn't force myself until last weekend's showcase tourney.

i work some adult ball in tulsa and had a catcher bitch about my outside corner while he's batting. nothing major, just asked "are we gonna get that too" my reply was you should know you've already been back here. that's about the only "trouble" i've had with that league. now the spanish league.....man is it tough. no fences, only chalk lines down the sides to mark dead ball territory and they are close. from everything i heard from other umpires this league had some bad apples and the police were called several times. now they hire off duty officers for security. only had 1 problem the 2 yrs i called for them. i learned "oilfield" spanish and can pretty much cuss with the best of these guys, had one fan start cussing me in spanish and i told him to go, he threatened to be waiting for me, his "team" escorted me to my car and waited till i left before they did. this fellow came up to me my next game and appoligized, and offered to buy my snacks and drinks for the day. turned out to be a classy bunch of guys that just wanted to continue playing the game.

i generally take the lineup sheets, fold them and stick them in my holder, with 1st base dugout on the right side. i will note on the top of the sheet which team it is usually with 1st letter of team or something like NEO. beside this i will write OC- and DC- for conferences. any changes i do something like: 8/12 t3 r1,r2 2out (8 for 12 top 3)

a little about me: my name is thomas hilburn i'm 38, married with 1 beautiful daughter (5 yrs old). i'm from okmulgee, ok. i started umpiring in 2000, i was working with a yl umpire and every day he would ask me some question about a sit he had the night before. got tired of doing it for free and started calling games myself, then got certified for hs my 3rd yr, then started working college ball in 2004, was with an assoc that worked all D2 and juco in OK, then went with a new assoc that took over the juco, been with them ever since. have had the pleasure of working some very big games in my short career and loved every second of them. my goal in umpiring other than to be the best i can is to work D1 and make it to Omaha.
