  1. Ditto UIC but i will let F2 know that as he moves up in level he needs to hang on to those pitches.
  2. yawetag - i have often thought that, but being married for twenty-seven yrs. (next week) i have learned when to bite my tongue. sometimes until it bleeds kevin finn... no offense taken - had the same question in back of my addled brain. just have to see what the next week holds, besides mai tais and other adult beverages ty
  3. well that would be a very good question. need to give it a week with the current splint if that doesn't work out, may have to go with surgery and a big foam armrest. that would derail the season. of course this next week spouse and i are off to kauai, needless to say the other half is not happy about the current injury
  4. thanks for the input. given the fact that i broke my hand wrestling with a drill it seems my season may be over this year. 5 - 6 weeks pretty much takes care of baseball in wyo. however i might purchase in preparation of next yr.
  5. Looking for a new one, considering my other post - looked closer at the one that took the shot. new cracks in "vinyl/rubber" (what ever the heck it is) coating. but no flexing of bars. What is a good mask for moderate dollars. don't want to drop 2 or 3 bills. I only call about 50 games a season. thanks ty
  6. ok Brian you spoke to soon. got in a wrestling match with my drill today and lost. Broke the third metacarpal in my right hand. Needless to say it was a "religious experience." Orthopedic visit tomorrow. Woohoo !!
  7. If you don't have one. Took a foul shot to the mask, chin level today, luckily the throat protector was there. Rocked my world for a couple of minutes. :smachhead:
  8. For those of you that work wood bat games, this may not be new. For me it is: Today is the first time i have been hit in the mask with a piece of shrapnel from a broken bat. Somewhat surreal.

    Rant

Worked a tourney this past weekend: friday - sunday. As i was working with others i would keep mental notes about mechanics & rotations that they did not do, even tho we pre-gamed. Here are some things i saw: 1. BU watching balls to the outfield that were clearly not his "assignment", and then not watching as BR or other runners were coming to bases, which clearly were his "assignment" Yes kids i would glance over and see what was happening. 2. PU calling strikes on balls where F2 gloved the pitch well below his knees or pick out of dirt. Not calling foul balls, down the line when i was working inside. (Runners and i both confused on a screamer down the 3bl) Not putting (pointing or saying) the ball in play after foul balls with runners on. 3. Messed up rotations in a 3 man system, where 1 guy ( U1) was not moving at all. consequently U3 and i did a great deal of creative coverage. After watching this, i decided to use these examples of things i did not want to emulate as i was working either field or bases with other umpires. None of these guys would take constructive criticism, so it is very difficult to raise their level of performance.

    Appeal process

Glad I could get us all thinking. Thanks again for the input. As a side note to this situation. The catcher, although he knew that he needed to appeal. (i don't think the coach actually said anything to F2, rather F2 just knew), the old " Yo pitcher, take the ball get on the rubber, step off and throw to 3rd" were the directions given by F2 to his hurler. Mind you the ball was never declared out of play.
  12. Right on!! As i review this thread, i have come to the following conclusions (A) I need to review the 2 umpire system manual. and ( I need to let him read this manual. : ) ty From the conversations we have had, me thinks he gets a great deal of his mechanics information via video - aka MLB and NCAA games on tv.
  13. Absolutely! If i am going out, i say so. Along with the standard signs for IFR, time play, 1st to 3rd coverage, etc. I have gone to him between innings and "reminded" him of coverage. But he insists....... As far as working or not working with him.. Hmm..... around wyo. we can't be very selective in who we work with, most of the time we are thankful that there are two semi-qualified people on the field. : )

    Appeal process

This might fit better under situation but what the heck: JrBR (13 -15) I am PU, Here it is: R2, R3. Passed ball, R3 scores, R2 misses third base ( i see this as F2 and F1 are playing keep away, attempting a play on R3). R2 scores. F2 and F5 in conversation state that "he missed third base" An appeal is made - but no verbal clarification on which runner they were appealing. Appeal was made to partner, who called R2 safe. Def. coach brought rule book onto field (shame, shame) and said "Nowhere does it say in the book the def. must clarify which runner." Ty: "Then how do we know which runner you are talking about?" Coach: You could have asked Ty: That is your job to know coach. In this instance is it necessary for the defense to clarify which runner?
  17. A closely related issue - What do you do with a partner who keeps "poaching" your calls. We have had pre-game meetings where I remind him: Ty: "When I am in A, you have F8 to the 3B line, i have F8 moving to the 1B line. When i am inside I have the V - LF and RF moving toward center; you take LF and RF moving to the lines." Partner: " Yup - okay" But he continues to call fly ball outs to CF, standing 5 feet in front of the plate while i am working in B or C. Yesterdays game, I am in A, foul fly ball on the first base line, 30 feet beyond the bag. I am right on top of this catch/no catch, and i hear FOUL BALL coming from my partner, (yes F3 did drop the ball). Those times that i do go out from A on a trouble ball and this guy is no where to be seen on the inside of the diamond. How does one diplomatically instruct this person?
  18. I agree NovaScotiablue, as i also watch to make sure they re - touch, just the curiosity of a very boring game getting the best of me. : ) ty
  19. maybe we should get caution tape for the coaches boxes. : )
  20. Had this thought run through my mind (although with me it was more like a jog) as i was working bases yesterday. Hypothetical situation: Rules set should not matter, as this concerns the retouch of a runner after a foul ball not caught. If said runner does not retouch, and then the BR hits safely, can the defense appeal the "no retouch" on the runner for an out. Or is it a moot point after the pitch, which the BR has hit. for those of you that need a better scenario: R2, BR fouls down the 3B line, R2 wanders back to second but does not touch base. BR then hits clean single to right center, R2 advances to third. Can defense now appeal to 2B for R2 not retouching after foul ball?
  21. Yo BrianC14, you just turned the old triple play with the advantageous 4th out. Right On! :question1:

    The Quiet EJ

points taken, gentlemen. Have a good week.
  23. I would be one of those that never really "played" the game. Couple yrs in LL, but having been raised a military brat (AF) never was in one location very long. Started doing this as others did - When my son was playing, nobody knew the rules so dad grabs a rulebook and the rest is history.

    The Quiet EJ

Finally dismissed a coach for arguing balls and strikes. Happened a couple of weeks ago. F1 is throwing a big looping curve, the kind that starts above the batter's shoulders and the catcher gloves it belt high, 2 feet behind the plate. (Ball!) Well the coach starts chirping, I told him, "we were not going to have this discussion." 3 innings later, after another series of big rainbows from F1, he walks and glares at me from dugout to mound. After his conference he yells from the mound "Hey can i ask you a question" (I do not like being yelled at) As he is moving towards me I said " you're gone." At this point we are face to face. All very civilized and adult conversational level. DC - I can't ask you a question? Ty - Yes you can, and when our discussion is over you are off the field. DC - Are you calling those pitches where the batters are standing, or the plate? Ty - The plate coach, it is a judgment call. Now you are off the field. DC - You are really going to throw me out of this game? Ty - Yup. DC - (A little bit louder now) Well now we are getting home town'd. He continues this rant as he collects his crap from the dugout. Mind you both teams are from out of town at this tourny. I waited for him to remove himself and continued the game. My partner didn't even know he got tossed.
  25. Also must consider: Did the ball strike the runner, in foul territory? If so then foul ball - send him back, batter is out for bunting foul on third strike. Had a play similar to this a looonnnggg time ago. except the runner was hit in the face with the ball - blood everywhere!:wow:
