1st-I was taught as a BU to call "Time", not "Foul". It is my job to call time for the contact, but as with play here, it is PU who determines if it is foul or out of the box. 2nd-I don't know that any BU has a better view of the positioning of the batters feet at time of contact. I for one have only once called a batter out for this and it was a drag bunt from a lefty and my partner was blocked.

I was taught that IF you must move a bat, keep your head up and eyes on the ball and runner. Squat over the bat like a center in football and "hike" it between your legs towards the backstop.

If on the rubber, how is this a phantom balk? I assume he was in fact at least in the mound area (a ball, not a balk)?

agree %100. If we don't call it, they will never learn. Call it when you see it. Just like those early season Junior games when the coaches ask you to NOT call balks. My response is always "I'll call them, however if you guys chose not to move the runners that's up to you". I call both IP and balk at all (appropriate) levels.

The only thing I do differently is I do MY stuff first. 1.)Introductions 2.)Get paid 3.)Sportsmanship at all times 4.)In legion and adult ball I do remind the coaches that the FPSR is in effect, as many coaches believe that since these are OBR games, that anything goes, NOT TRUE. All slides must be direct and to the bag or away from the fielder. 5.)Time/Run limit if applicable 6.)Go over rules on courtesy runners 7.)Ok coach take us around (ground rules) Takes 2/3 minutes, don’t need or want help from my partner at the plate conference

Think I got this here but I am not sure. A fellow ump advised to try think of it like shooting a gun. Control your breathing, inhale before the pitcher begins his wind-up then exhale and hold steady during the release. It has helped me a number a times when the blinkies have come around. :HD:

We too use arbiter, it is set up with NO acceptance window. As soon as you log in all assigned games are automatically accepted. We are assessed a $10 fee for all turn backs that are within 7 days of the game. Our calendar to block games is only open from February until the start of HS ball (April 1). If you need to block a day after that you must e-mail the assigner. Our assigner fees: BB Varsity - $4.83, BB JV & F - $3.50 Independent BB $3.00 SB Varsity - $4.69, SB JV & F - $3.43 Independent SB $0.00 Our association Fees $104.50 (dues, State HS fees, rule books and insurance) Note: the $10 assessment is not automatic, if you have a good reason, no fee is charged. Also, you have right to appeal an assessment. The fee is really used as a “stick” to keep guys from cherry picking games, more often than not the fee is waived.

I had a great assignment, plate for a "Carpenter Cup" game. The tournament is a regional all-star tourny. Had game #10 scheduled for Thursday at 12:30 pm, got moved to 2pm then rained-out and moved to Saturday at 10:30 am.
