I'm pretty stocky. Put it this way when I put the all star system 7 on I had no neck. Worse than any shoulder pads I ever wore playing football. Maybe I didn't fit it right? I do want protection. But also low profile. Anyone know if the shutt is safe enough for varsity level ball?

I need a new CP my old Gold WV needs to be replaced. Don't think I want a new WV, just never really liked it. I know it's safe, but want something else to try. No on the All-Star System 7. Tried it too bulky. I Mainly do high school, all levels. I want protection but not the bulk. What do you all recommend?

Can an offensive team forfeit or forego its at bats? If yes, whats the rule in either L.L. or Fed rulebook. I was watching a L.L. game. Team 1 killing Team 2, 18-0 in two. Team 1 going on offense coach says we'll take our 3 outs. Team 2 coach agrees, wasn't sure of the rule. I was trying to look it up in both the L.L. and Fed. rule book after the game but can't find it.

Had this happen at a JV game, so I was flying solo. Home on defense, R1 on 2nd, SS keeps yelling something out, close to back ( hack, rack, etc) does this the entire game when someone's on 2nd. Visiting coach feels his kids are being obstructed. I tell him no, because I did not feel the fielder was hindering the runner or changing the pattern of play. Was I correct? And was there any other rule I could have applied or anything else I should have done with that player.

Sort of along the same lines of my last question. Our L.L. district decides to have a Jr. TOC tournament, they give a time limit but you must complete 5 innings. Home team is ahead 5-4 going into the bottom of 5. Not quite time so home team goes to bat. They score 4 more and go past time, no outs. So I'm about to call the game when the District Admin running the tournament tells me they need to finish and record three outs. I'm trying to tell him, no that it would just revert back to the bottom of 5 and win 5-4, if the coach wishes to forfeit his at bats, ( thought I read that some where) think I could have just ended the game but I had to give the guy something. Did I make this up or did I really read this some where, high school, travel ball, L.L. there are so many slight veriations that I'm fogeting.

During a game a visiting team only has 9 players, they are 0n defense kid gets hurt with two outs. Says he is able to continue (small mouse around eye, small cut, no real bleeding)' the coach moves him to right field. He looks ok to go. Four runs later the team get it's third out, team now behind. As the kid passes me I see blood streaming down his face and the kid is crying. I stop him he says his eye is killing him, I tell the coach. I know the kid (small town) and get his parents over to see him. His parents take kid to Dr. right now. Everyone is worried about the kid and say safety first, everything is great, except the kid is up. One coach is saying you just give the team an out when he comes to bat and call game when they go back out to field. Other coach says game is done because they can't field 9. Partner agrees and ends the game, says that giving the team an out only applys to travel ball not L.L. Not sure of Rule or which rule it might be under. Again this is L.L. Jr.'s. What about High School, Travel Ball etc

I was working a high a school playoff game and had this situation happen a couple of times. I'm U3 andI'm in the C. Bases Loaded, no outs, infield playing in. Didn't feel comfortable at all. Moved on both sides of F6 because of how he was playing. Is it same as in two man? Position: even with, to slightly behind and off to the side, wanted to make sure I wan't in the way for a player charging ball. One time closer to 3rd and once closer to 2nd, because of how F6 was playing. Any advice. : HS

Thanks will do, with regards with the hat and the HSM, is there a standard? What are older umpires saying? I know two years ago I saw a pro umpire not wearing a hat with HSM and then I believe this year I saw one with a hat. I understand tradition and I'm all for it, but just umpires use to wear the raft in the 1940's & 1950's equipment changes. I just like it without the hat myself. I'll do what ever my association says. Thanks.

Definitely do not cut off the metatarsal plate off your shoes. But remove the foot cover from your shin guards. On most Wilson models you will have to drill out the rivets holding it on. The shoes offer many times better protection than the flap on the shin guards. The flap is virtually worthless. And not to mention some veterans will mock having both. As for wearing a hat with a hockey style mask, you'll just have to do what your association requires. Our association allows you not to have a hat if you wear the HSM, but each association has different standards. I tried a HSM, it wasn't for me but they do offer awesome protection, so choosing the HSM over a traditional mask is just a matter of personal preference. If you feel safer or just like it better for any reason, thats good enough for me.

Chief I have two attire questions for you. Bought some rebok plate shoes, but I hate that big cover on the shoe, is it proper to cut that off and leave my cover from my wilson gold shin guards on? I was told that even though I wear a bucket or hockey style mask that I still should wear my 4 stich hat under it. This was my association. Personally, I don't want to, but I'll do it if I have too. I know the older guys don't like the bucket, (and I have both). I just feel safer in the bucket. What are your thoughts?

Being new, I just wanted to see if I was right or wrong One out R1 on first, R1 steels second with pitch. Batter swings and misses F2 drops 3rd strike. Batter beats out the throw to first. Coach comes out and complains that first was occupied at time of the pitch. I told him that because R1 stole second that made first un-occupied. Right or wrong? R1 was clearly half way to second by the time the ball was released by F1.

Good call I would call that too. Have you encountered a pitcher who repeatedly kept touching his hat while on the mond and what would you do?

Since just starting out I've asked this question a lot. How do you define your strike zone? This is in reference to inside and outside pitches. Some say that if the ball hits the black then its a strike. Others say two ball widths outside or inside. A few (including coaches and players) say I'm a bit tight. I feel I'm tight on the outside and high pitches but a little more giving on the low and inside pitches, probably because I set up to the inside. One guy has said to be a little more liberal the lower you go. Meaning 9-10 olds the two ball width and shrink it as you go up in age. Just wondering what you all think.

I'm sorry Dave, I'm truly not that sensitive just didn't appreciate the way you gave your advice. I know you were trying to save me money and injury in the long run. Right now I'm using an (barrowed) Honig (Ribbed) CP for Jr. (13-14) All-stars. Just looking to buy new gear, for myself. I figure, if I start doing HS next year it would be at the Freshmen, JV level, so I have a year or two before I need to buy a WV. I have to get the expenses past the wife if you know what I mean.
