  1. In central Illinois, schools have checks for us as we get to the field. I think some of the older guys would walk away if the check wasn't there when they got there. As far as rate, schools all pay different rates for different levels. There is no "set" rate. Especially the rural schools, because they have a much harder time getting umpires. They pay higher as most umpires have to drive 30+ minutes (that's a long time around here to drive to a game) to get to the school.
  2. Sorry to bring up an old-ish topic....but you guys verbalize OBS as soon as it happens or after the play is over? It's a delayed dead ball, right?
  3. Bases empty. B1 hits a ground ball to short, close play and the throw gets past F3. As BR1 goes past 1B, F4 runs after the ball that had gone past F3 and crashes into BR1. Got anything?
  4. So, in MLB I've always thought that Jake Arrieta has a weird motion, in that it's almost the same before he pitches with runners on and no runners on. Can they be similar but different? No runners on Runner on
  5. Youth baseball game with a runner on 2nd. Pitcher went to to do the spin and throw. I'm BU, he does it and it looks really weird to me, but I don't say anything. Partner calls time and comes out to me, with a smile on his face. Tells me he turned the wrong way and didn't move his back foot. I knew that looked odd...
  6. Thanks guys. This blows my mind that the IHSA uses something different than most.
  7. To be clear, B is on the 1B side of the mound and C is on the 3B side, right?
  8. Is this mechanics people use? In Illinois, the official clinic hand out says we are only in C when 3rd base is in "imminent danger" of being stolen. In all other situations, U2 will be in B.
  9. I'm at work and don't have my rulebook handy. Set position is not the same as back foot in front of the rubber, but bent at the waist, hands down looking for sign, right? It's when they bring their feet/hands together they come "set".... Just want to make sure I'm not confusing myself too much.
  10. To be clear, you guys are calling what is basically incidential contact the "trainwreck" right? Two guys making a baseball play and happened to crash into each other.
  11. This is Illinois from the IHSA: We are allowed to wear other colors during regular season. These are mostly enforced in the state playoffs where the IHSA makes umpiring assignments. Some guys have an entire rainbow in their cars.
  12. Hey all, high school/jr high ump in central IL here. Glad to find a community of umpires to bounce ideas off of that understand NFHS over MLB rules.
