Today something very odd happened, I was working the bases and my partner was motioning for me to come talk to him. Turns out the only game ball he had left was stuck in a pocket in his ball bag and he couldn't get it out, so for like 3 minutes we had to call time and I was standing there trying to pull this baseball out of his bag. I've never seen something like that happen before.

The worst part was I was working a double header and of course I had the losing teams next game, and it wasn't as bad as the first game but it still was like watching a car crash, you want to look away but you can't(or in this case are being paid to not look away).

I was told since it was tournament play, not in season play they wanted to, and this is a quote "promote competition in our youth", this was a "season starting" tournament, which essentially means its the first games the teams are playing as a team and yet they want it to "promote competition". The only run rule was that the game ended if a team was up by 15 runs after 4 innings or 10 after 5 innings, didn't help because all 60 runs scored in the first 4 innings.

This weekend I was working a 12U Travel Tournament, at least they called it Travel Ball. I had my first game at 9am and the first inning went smoothly, but then when the "Away" Team came up to bat in the second the Home Team's pitching didn't show up at all. They walked 30 runs home in that inning that is not a typo 30 runs there was no mercy rule, every run was walked home. No matter how big a strike zone I called they found a way to walk the batters. They went through three pitchers, one of them got one out, and gave up ten runs, and he has a 270 E.R.A. now. Oh and when they did finally end the inning, which was done because of a batting out of order situation they then came up to bat, stuck out 1-2-3 and proceeded to give up 15 more runs. Final Score was 60-0, real win for promoting baseball in our youth right? Anyone ever have a worse final score?

I appreciate that but I'm not really able to do traveling, thanks though.

I live in York, I'm being trained to advance into mens ball and HS where there is a shortage.

I wear an All Star 2500, it took a bit of practice but now I have no problems with my glasses falling off. You should be fine, although I can't speak for the shock FX by wilson when I had one it gave me problems but it was a size too small.

How do you get to be a qualified umpire there? I wasn't talking about any offical qualification, just guys who have been proven capable in game situations. Who proves them capable? Generally older partners, sometimes the UIC or Deputy UIC evaluates umpires, honestly your considered "capable" here if you don't start numerous $#itstorms by blatantly missing calls.

I'm seriously condering(and frankly have been for a long time) moving south after college, warmer and more games.

I have worked with a "buddy" who one might call a "best friend" or something else, lots of fun because you know exactly how they work, plus you can knock alot of the pre-game conference out ahead of time.
-
I always hear people talking about a "shortage of qualified umpires", well clearly that isn't true here our UIC sent out an email announcing that there aren't enough games to give out some to all umpires. My entire spring schedule, a tournement double header, thats all..... Does this happen elsewhere? I'm not entirely sure where I'm going with this, just venting, but really too many umpires? Is this something happening elsewhere or just here in PA?

Honigs Plate Coat - Buyers Remorse
BaltimoreUmpire replied to ntimmerman's topic in Umpire Equipment
So steal the coat as retribution for it being unacceptably late ? Yeah, that's a good plan.It would at least wake them up, maybe they don't ship it to you then, maybe they take the time to call the buyer and figure out the problem, there are ways you can do this and still be in the "right" it just puts the ball in their court. -
New Umpire: What's the best equipment to buy?
BaltimoreUmpire replied to Dodgers47's topic in Umpire Equipment
Generally speaking the cost of umpire equipment is cheaper than the cost to the resulting injuries. -

Honigs Plate Coat - Buyers Remorse
BaltimoreUmpire replied to ntimmerman's topic in Umpire Equipment
I've never ordered a plate coat from them but I will say they never have contacted me back when they say they will, I initate all conversations with them. -
Can you explain this please? Or if you have one you can use one of those sticks teams use to practice hitting with. Explain what? Drill a hole in a baseball, and insert it (with super glue) to the end of a golf shaft. Have someone give you a whack w/ your CP on ......can you feel it?

Are these the real classic shirt or an "off brand"? I'm not sure, Plus Pos lists them as "New Old Stock" which tells me they are probably left over from when they originally carried them.

Has Anyone Ever Seen This CP?
BaltimoreUmpire replied to BaltimoreUmpire's topic in Umpire Equipment
Seeing the back it looks very much like the plus pos zero gravity, same harness as it so I'D never buy it because it would slide around too much. -
The rookie didn't know what to do. The vet was the one who offered to leave (as a crew) and the coaches didn't want any part of that. It all came down to the home coach feeling guilty that he didn't handle his sub situation properly...so he wanted to do right by taking his runner off the bag and fixing the BOO. He probably also thought he was doing the rookie a favor by fixing the BOO for him. It's entirely different to me if the vet was threatening to leave WITH his partner, my main problem was him leaving him behind. I get the rookies confusion but if his partner is telling him that it can't be done he should probably take his advice.

I don't agree with the reset but if I am working with a rookie who is willing to break the rules on this I'm gonna be sticking around because who knows what rule the rookie might "compromise" around next, and I'm not leaving him alone to potentially cause a serious problem with another compromise. I sure as hell wouldn't have let this go down though, what if #9 hits a deep ball, trips and breaks his leg rounding 1st? Suddenly by allowing a redo you MAY be liable and even if not you still might have to deal with a $hit storm in the aftermath. If I ever leave a game early(and I have once) I sure as hell am not leaving my partner behind, especially when he seems like the type to let the coaches run all over him.

Perhaps, and I'm completly speculating here, a catcher could use this "Davey Strap" if he were to wear the skull helmet forward like Kevin Cash does. And also a mask does fly off just the same wearing a skull helmet as catchers do, I wore an LMXW my first season with a skull helmet on backwards and it flew off just the same(I didn't realize at the time that umpires don't wear skull helmets). I'm seriously considering buying one of these, he's knocked it down to $21.95 now so not a terrible price tag.

Exactly...but how would fingerprinting have prevented Sandusky? It wouldn't have, people are trying to put in place these policies because they want to feel safe, when in reality it wouldn't have helped. Security Theater.? What does that mean?
