  3. You are free to cite the rule to justify your EJ and handle your game as you see fit, but I think it may have been a case of using a rule to solve a problem that didn't exist. What would have happened if you ignored the helmet throw. The defense is happy that they prevented a run, and the defense goes back on defense in a competitive rivalry game. Ejecting changed the game dynamics. There are times when we have no choice in changing the game dynamics, but we should avoid doing so whenever possible.
  4. Helmet throw was in disgust with my call (or possibly so) = EJ. Helmet throw was in frustration of failing to score = I didn't notice that. I'm not EJ'g over such an emotional reaction not directed at me or an opposing player.
  5. Do we have a call like an IFF near the foul line THAT's INTERFERENCE, IF FAIR ? It'd sound weird, but that's what it is.
  6. yes, I think so ... I didn't interpret the OP that R2 touched 3B, but reached could mean the same thing. If so, then the call was probably correct.
  7. The umpire is not supposed to put the ball back in play until runners have re-touched their base. So there is no penalty to the runners in the umpire incorrectly puts the ball back in play. The rule was put in place because R1 would "take his lead" one step from 2B after a foul ball. The rule prevented this kind of cheating. I can't ever remember looking to make sure a runner has retouched his base. If he was trying to cheat and take a lead near 2B, then I'd probably notice that and enforce the rule.
  8. If the umpire doesn't call TIME to prevent a $#!+show, then R2 is legally entitled to 2B, and can not be tagged out if touching 2B. R1 does not not have such protection and would be out if tagged while on 2B. If the umpire thinks that it was his action/inaction that caused the runners to be put in jeopardy, he can reset the situation and put runners back on 2B/1B.

    Fair/Foul

In HS rules a foul stays foul, but in OBR, if a wrong foul call is fixable, you can fix it. But if players change their actions based on the erroneous foul call, you'll probably have to eat it.
  10. Interested if they'll include interference/obstruction explanations...the ones that make spectators and announcers scratch their heads. Maybe they'll will learn something. How this will the trickle down to lower levels will be interesting to see hear.
  11. The line that I get nearly every weekend doing travel ball. I'm at the backstop getting a drink and I'll here: Hey Studley, my ex has the kids this weekend. Can I buy you a drink after the game ? Italicize fond for that sultry, sensual delivery. I think it'd be bad umpire etiquette to refuse.
  12. I could walk "crotch first" into any bar if I knew Napoli had my back.
  13. With R1, B hits one down the LF line. R1 rounds 2B, runs into F6 (with a legitimate chance to reach 3B) and they both go down in a heap. BU loud/pointing says THAT'S OBSTRUCTION. When action ceased he awarded R1 3B, but OHC wants him to award BR 2B (he held BR up at 1B when he saw that R1 was just beyond 2B). BU said no, everyone knew that he had obstruction for the R1/F6 entangle. BR/OHC should have known that this meant R1 was to get 3B, so BU wasn't protecting BR to 2B. Was it unreasonable to expect BR/OHC to know the implication of that obstruction call ? Should BR been awarded 2B ?
  14. I want to get with my partner and hit the gate, but if my partner pulls this, I'll meet him at the locker room...and then tell him why I left him.
  15. oh, you poor bastid... ... and its groupies...plural. Go get yourself some.
  16. We have a hard enough time recruiting young officials. Rumor of a rule prohibiting being picked up by female spectators would be devastating. The survival of the umpiring profession may depend on you showing this young lady a good time. Do it for the sake of humanity.

    base running

I'd say that if they retrieved 2B, put it back in place and tagged it, that would be an unmistakable appeal attempt. This valid appeal is a force third out, no run(s) can score.

    Exhausted

    1. You have never used this rule (for good reason), but you give credibility to using it. I wouldn't talk the talk, if I hadn't walked the walk. 2. I do appreciate suggestions made, but if I think that one is impractical or will cause more trouble than its worth, then I will point that out...I couldn't let it go, less other readers think it is a good idea. 3. Just because using a solution is supportable by the rules doesn't mean it should be used. You'd be the first umpire that I know that has never lost the count...Congrats
  19. My opinion of priorities (wrt protection/expense): Chest protector (hardshell) Mask pads (notice an expensive mask frame is not my priority) Plate Shoes Cup (not a high dollar expense, but don't get the cheapest) Shin guards (fit is most important consideration)

    Exhausted

So how many times have you given a penalty ball for F1 taking too long ? BTW, one Smitty in my area doesn't use an indicator either, then twirls his fingers asking me for the count...forgetaboutit
  21. F2 is free to take that high risk/low reward chance with all the info needed to calculate it.
  22. I'm all for good (slow) ball/strike timing/mechanics, but you should try to verbalize BALL before F2 risks throwing the ball into CF on Ball-4 with R1 going on the pitch.
  23. Blue, that glove isn't gray...its taupe.
  24. I don't know why you would spend energy looking for a mythical rule that doesn't apply. If an adult league wants to go back to the old days of taking out middle infielders, then they need to provide you with the documentation. Otherwise current OBR do not allow it. If these weeknight warriors want to spike and fight, end the game and insist on getting paid. And anyone insisting that this is the way that a youth baseball game should be played has no business being in authority.
  25. After 12 years of umpiring, the only piece of equipment that I still use from my umpire starter kit is the steel mask.
