If you do not wear a protector at fast pitch softball you don't be umpiring long. Hopefully you'll just be in the hospital and not dead.

Correct - they took the lead that inning. If team A didn't get a full bottom half (I just realized I said Team B was HT not VT. I meant VT) score would revert to previous inning, and team B would lose. So they wanted to get off the field quickly and then have a quick bottom half.

This is true. But in the very few drop dead limit's I've done, there are way bigger problems than in no new inning games. At least my personal experience.

This was HS level ball, 7 inning games, rules initially said 2 hours drop dead, but tourney people on day one made a decision to make it 1:45. Neither of mine went past 1:20 I don't think.

A perfect example today of why drop dead rules are some of the dumbest (if not dumbest) rules in existence. Doing a softball DH for an in house league as a favor for a guy on the department. (I actually had fun.) There is a 1:45 minute drop dead rule for this tournament. All of this info is second hand, but from MANY people (the tourney is in the town I live in and I know a lot of the participants). Team A is HT and #1 seed. Team B is from out of town. I think the 5th inning team B is winning and there are 16 minutes left in the game. Team B is HT. Team B coach instructs her players to get strikes as quickly as possible so they can finish this inning. They are swinging at things on the ground, in the air, etc... The plan is to be winning with like 10 minutes left and then stop in the middle of the top of the 6th. Team A takes offense to this. Umpire isn't really doing anything to quell other than telling Team A's coach to control her parents. At some point Team A hits a batter with a pitch. Possibly intentional, possibly not. Umpire does nothing. All Hell beaks loose. I'm talking w/another umpire on a different field. 25 minute delay total, UIC is involved, eventual outcome is pitcher is ejected, Team A winds up winning and my game 2 starts 50 minutes late. Had we had a simple no NEW INNING rule instead of that asinine drop dead rule none of this would have occurred. I had fun, all teams on my field were very respectful and had a great time. I did catch some flack for enforcing the chin strap required rule, but otherwise heard nothing and a few of the parents from the fire department that I know said I had probably their best zone this year and hustled more than most and trust me, they'd have told me if I was horse crap.

I do sort of tell them. At a tournament or travel game (daddy ball) I'll ask each team what they have for the score and remind of run rule if necessary, in the fourth inning typically. I don't keep score so how can I enforce that rule if I don't know the score. I'll bet a MINIMUM of one game every other tourney I do the two teams do not have the same score. I certainly don't want to deal with that after the game should be over. At high school, upper level games, or games with a scoreboard I don't.

Is anyone else having issues with Tapatalk not working for this forum? It works for me for my other forums, but starting Thur it barely works for this one. Matt

I'm at the Cubs/Nationals game tonight. Foggiest game I've ever been to in my life. Cubs got a triple on what would normally be a routine fly to center. Just an observation.

Yes Rich, great job. I know that I would have stood there and yelled for quite some time. Which would have worked out worse overall. You probably did what was best overall for the situation and hopefully the umpire will either get some training, or won't get anymore games. (Although it's probably not likely at all...)

Umpires are now being instructed to not enforce rule 7.13 on force plays at home. The association clinic I go to has Honig's there with most of their equipment and you can try it on, all is free shipping, even if they don't have your size and they have to send it to you. Most you take home that day. A different association had similar setup with someone else. This was two years ago and I don't remember who it was, but I think it was Ump Attire. I don't need a .pdf to take the kids off the field. Play it safe. Err on the side of safety! no one should the pdf to know what to do ..........., but I think he's looking for a time frame for which to delay a game ........ Correct. I know when to take the kids off the field, and do. Often to the disappointment of the coaches/parents/kids, but too bad. My question is this - is there a SPECIFIC RULE addressing this in little league. The pdf that was posted suggests a "reasonable" time. If that's all the rule says, I could see where a problem could arise.

Hello all, A quick search didn't come up with anything specific to little league. I rarely do little league (I think I've done 2 games in my life) and so I don't really know the rules. I'm guessing the rules are similar to FED etc, but is there a little league specific rule addressing lightening/thunder? I have a buddy who's kid plays Little League and was asking me. Thanks!

How many times have you seen an inning stopped with runners on and an out? Usually that finish the sixth inning out whatever. Yes it happens, but not that often. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

In MLB (*true* OBR), they have access to good radar, have great fields and grounds crew guys with doctorate degrees in grass half the time. It is extremely rare they will start an inning they didn't think they can end, so there is rarely a suspended game after it goes the required innings. Everywhere else that I have worked that uses OBR rules has some modification to the rule to have a revert. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

@millerforrest while I don't necessarily disagree with you, I see value in the FT mechanic. Coaches will sometimes ask a partner that didn't signal FT "did he tip it?" Does it really matter, no. But it helps sell to everyone yes, I can see things back here, I know he tipped it. Plus, Jason (MidAmUmp) answered and agrees its necessary. He is one of the best umpires on this board, teaches some amazing clinics, umpires D1 ball on a regular basis. You should at least value his opinion, even if you don't agree with it. (No one here ever agrees with everyone all the time.) What DOES bother me is many of my partners lately signal a timing play on EVERY SINGLE 2 out play.
