  1. Your first responsibility is balls and strikes, mentally slow the game down. Those plays happen all the time and the more you see it the more you will get used to it and not "lose it, for lack of a better word). Record the pitch take your time and let the play develop.
  2. At my sons game Babe Ruth, no idea who the ump was behind the plate. play at the plate and he crossed the 1st based line and followed the ball into the catcher, and he ended up in front of home plate, called out, (kid was safe IMO) coach came out and the ump said " I had the call I was right on TOP of it" He also threw his mask off and was wearing cleats. Ugh..... Pre Season- I told my sons coach not to get me involved but he did ask me about a base award and the ump ended up awarding it correctly. Not my association so I didnt say anything afterwards to the guy, if I see him again I may at least tell him to get plate shoes, unless he wants to be sitting down for 3-4 weeks, and that he shoudlnt throw his mask.
  3. "Terrible game blue" You "your right - if I were you i would probably practice more"
  4. Always legal why wouldnt it be? Ball is alive and 1st is what he gets, if he can steal the rest all the better. that will be the last time that catcher is lazy back there.
  5. Or "Felt like 10 coach"
  6. Sorry if this has been done before, but I need some laughter today. Hey Blue your missing a good game!!! Me "I know they made me do this one"
  7. Sounds like another stupid local rule made by those who don't know anything about baseball. INDEEEEEEEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are killing the game. My favorite, U10, they dont keep score, all bat, 1 base at a time for all hits, but they do let you continue on bads throws. They asked me to Ump those when my boys played, I deferred "No thanks, I only work baseball games"
  8. Idiots. He shoud be forced to stand in front of a pitching machine set at 100 MPH for 3 hours. Or work the dish for every T-ball game in the area for 3 years, free.
  9. Rule 9 - Toss em all !!!
  10. Easy - pregame no balk penalties. the game will be 27 hours long for this game if you told the coach every time (maybe, depending on talent.) why tell them each time? your not an instructor. If you call the balk each time and dont enforce your going to distract the players. I hate modified rules. Oh A plays B but since its tuesday and A is home they are allowed to bat out of order. Safety rules yes but "pure" rules no, they hurt umpires.Balks at 12, the coaches dont know why call it????????
  11. Found this from J/R doing a quick google search. The Rules of Professional Baseball employs methodology that would be considered standard in any technical manual or course. Rules and their related concepts are presented with painstaking attention to details of language. For instance, a "catch" very specifically means "catch" of an airborne batted ball (or airborne pitched ball) for an out; to be distinguished from "gloving" the ball-gaining possession of any throw, or a batted or pitched ball that is no longer airborne. Since every word has a specific meaning, confusion is averted when the terms are used in examples or related rules. Also, similar concepts are presented together. For example, "catch" (for an out) and "tag" (of a runner or base for an out) have identical requirements; the fielder must gain complete control and show voluntary release of the ball in completing the catch or tag. So to answer if his foot was off the bag and he made a swipe tag and the ball came out, I have the runner safe as the fielder did not satisfy the requirement. For some reason I thought J/R defined them differently.
  12. Was his foot on the bag? If not, he needs to complete the catch, I am at work but I'm pretty sure J/R has some wording around a dropped fly ball and a dropped thrown ball maybe someone here can provide that, if not I will look tonight. The catch is complete upon voluntary release of the ball is the definition but i think I remember J/R stating something about this. Perhaps also, someone who attended Jims or Harry's course or a clinic may have that exact knowledge/wording/insight.
  13. Quick question - in a slow developing play at the plate, have you ever told a batter to move, if he was to close?
  14. In 1 If he used the safety bag and did not intentionally interfere I have nothing. If F3's momentum carried him into BR, it aint BR's fault. Unless I miss read.
  15. Home team Skip - (Im thinking of several Utopian responses) " have your field guys lay down the boxes, if not I have to use my judgement, don't question it - shut up and go away" " Teach your kids how to bat" " do you smile when you get the coaches additional pay, cause your not earning it"? "Get back on your bucket fatboy." VT - "dont blame me, I think the other coach is cheating by not having the boxes put down". " Teach your kids how to bat" " do you smile when you get the coaches additional pay, cause your not earning it"? "Get back on your bucket fatboy." Good mood today, sorry.
  16. All Drill teams Did this when I was in, primarily with BDU's. Even you Jar heeeeeeeeeds.
  17. Woodbridge
  18. Old Military trick - turn your pants inside out, run duct tape down the front and back pleat, reverse them again and iron the pleat. I also have my pockets sewed shut. That only works with pants with the straight front. No pleats. I also put 2 layers of duct tape at the bottom to stop them from wearing and add weight. I have also been known to starch my base hat with a mixture of Water - StaFlo startch and elmers glue. Mix staflo for extra extra stiff and water add a couple shots of elmers. spray it on, rub it in with fingers. add a little water if it is shiny or gets white. Buy Heal and sole dressing for your shoes, use as directed. Its sometimes hard to find. that stuff makes your soles look better than new. but be careful spill it on somethign including yourself and it aint coming out and do not put it on the leather or it will crack.
  19. 45 minutes before a HS game last year my partner who I never worked with before were goin through our pregame with about 20 minutes to go he starts dressing for the plate. He was putting his shins outside his pants, i asked him if he was screwin with me and he said no, i do it all the time i have a skin problem and cant wear em under my pants. I said, I'll take the plate, he said no he'll do it. I had no idea what to do. 10 minutes before we walked up to the field he puts them on right, looks at me and said, "gotcha Kid". He did it to losen us up before the game. It worked we both had a great game and not just an easy game. At our next association meeting, a bunch of the old timers were talking about it and how he does it all the time to new partners.
  20. Update: My son had a game this weekend and as I was going to the stand I saw him at another field. Same Yankees gear (to answer above, not a uniform, it just look likes he bought one of each in the Yankees isle at Modells) He was sitting on a bucket in the entry of the dugout. I walked to the backstop after the innning and told the ump (friend of mine) about the guy, and he said he was chirping all game, i told him to make him move to see what would happen and he did it when the first batter came up. he was pissed and couldnt see his batters anymore, so he couldnt chirp. after the game I talked to my friend and he said he wouldnt stop chirping ( my friend is laid back), we spoke about him fixing that in the future to stop the chirping. I spoke to the Ump assigner and he said the guys been a PITA since the season started. (2 weeks!! maybe) all the umps are bad and his team can't compete if they arent fair. He's 0-4 and 2 games ended early due to mercy rule. Parents - jeeeeeez.
  21. Not one station had a good replay of that at bat, the only thing that really bothered me is on ESPN, one of the guys said, "I can't really tell if he broke his wrists on that". He shouldnt even have moved on that pitch, its his own fault for putting it in the umps hands. It would have been a shame if he took ball 4.
  22. We are taught to call the strike and signal the out. When dropped do nothing - the teams needs to be aware of the situation. But who can argue with Jim E?
  23. You call the dead ball, stop the runners, award as neccesary and go out to check? What happens if it wasnt OOP? The mentor is right, the assigner is wrong, what if they pick it up and throw home now your in the outfield grass and making a call at the plate? too many things can go wrong. Stick with what was mentioned during the plate meeting.
  24. I didnt call time because i didnt consider it a play being made on the runner, becuase the ball was left in front of the plate. I stuck my arm out said that obstruction (pointing) and dropped it when he touched home. I'd love to hear comments about time being called or not. Never too old to learn. Thanks SDSteve. PS - I hate the fact that you always have nice weather.
  25. LL game last year. I never do them because my kids play in the league and I'm on the board. They had a no show and I was there and had my equipment. I called for the plate meeting and knew it was going to be bad as both coaches looked at me like I had 2 heads, I should have known it was going to be a problem from that point on. I went over the ground rules, safety, sportsmanship and fairplay etc... the VC was attired in 100% full Yankees regalia, shoes, hat, shorts, shirt even his clipboard had a Yankees sticker on it. 2nd inning - R2, no outs. Batter flys to deep center field, I move out and line up to watch the catch and see if I can catch the tag up, no catch. I move to cover the plate. throw comes in from cutoff and its gonna be close, Catcher is about 3 feet in front of home plate, not sure why. throw comes in hits in front of the catcher - catcher thinking he has the ball jumps into baseline and R2 and catch collide, the ball is sitting in front of home plate where catcher left it. I signal and call obstruction, R2 gets up and touches home, I remove obstruction call and place batter at 3rd. VC freaks out about the collision and want BR tossed and no run. He is yelling, I stand with hands behind my back and state "I had obstruction, runs score, lets continue" he gets in my face, i walk away, he chases as I write down the situation. I stop and say coach lets play The call stands, he starts goin off about appealing, I told him coach you can do what ever you want but its a judgement call and can't be appealed. I tell him to get in the dug out he gets in my face again and says " your an a** hole, you know your wrong" He gets tossed. I turn around and a parent is very close to the fence behind home plate, he says " Im waiting for you after the game, your mine" I call the cops. Its my town they are from another, I tell both coaches play will resume after the police arrive. The parent starts walking away but I keep my eye on him, cops come, I point the guy out, we get questioned. I state my case, the parent denies, 3 people standing there all state that he said it. The cops question the guy and start writting the report, I get the game restarted and finish the inning. they call me over and ask me what I want, they were gonna lock him up and gave me a choice, lock him up or allow him to leave. It was a 2 day tournament so I said I want him gone and that means the whole weekend and the rest of the year if they come back to play. he waits on a corner about 3 blocks away for a cab. I start the game and 3 kids on that team apologized to me for the coaches behavior, one said " we all hate him, thanks for kicking him out". the assistant coach came out and asked if it was obstruction because the catcher didnt have the ball, I said yes and he said thought so, I asked him if he could ensure the parents knew, he said dont worry they all hate Joe Torre anyway. Sorry this is so long, that's one of the reasons I dont do lower levels anymore.
