Officially starting my little league umpire journey tomorrow
Richvee replied to orangebird's topic in Youth Recreation Ball
My son, in charge of hiring/training in his department once said to me, “Im tired of trying to teach “C” students. -
I only beat you because you added more correct detail 👍
-
Agree - it’s that easy. But I’d clarify this just a bit. Our interpreter said white is OK for the BR “as long as there’s no play at 1b”. A booted GB with no throw, force at another base with no return throw to 1b, etc. BR can use white or colored.

Sounds like together you're getting a good education. I help out a few groups training new umpires. There's limited time to train, and different groups have different philosophies. One group I help with does more on field drills, plate work, mechanics, and advise you to read the rulebook, and get familiar with it, while the other focuses is on the rule book, and then one or two classes on the field. Soak it all in. There's a lot to learn. As for that outline on the plate meeting...Obviously do what your group wants, but that whole paragraph about "the reasons we're here today" is a bit over the top for me. -
It's funny you say that. I haven't watched SNL in years, and this skit is typical what I've thought about SNL since around that same time you mention...Sometimes they come up with funny ideas for a skit, but they can't seem to translate them into anything that's actually funny
-
One constant is, as a collective, we take far too much crap without ejecting.

Stop!! He may be watching. (Half kidding. If it adds revenue, he’ll consider it)

I'm not familiar with LL anymore. I'm not sure how diligent LL is on making sure every member has access and is informed by website notes and emails each and every time an interp, play review, etc. is published. I know FED has very little follow up, requirements to read and be aware of interps. They sure don't do any follow up videos or bulletins. My guess is half the county's varsity umpires haven't seen the 2025 interps put out last week. NCAA sends everything out in an email, and if logging in on Refquest, you'll have messages informing you of the videos and interps you haven't watched, or anything else released by NCAA that you haven't read yet. NCAA has made it very difficult to say "I didn't see that memo" ...Same cannot be said for FED...and I can't comment on LL.

We call this cage work. Sometimes cage work with live batting. Probably more popular up here where where we're happy when early season temps break 45 degrees

A few times over 15 years while on the bases for bladder relief. Being on the plate, and having to exit for a more severe restroom break has always been a recurring nightmare. Some people have recurring dreams of running away from something and not moving.... Not me 😆

On a batted ball, a fielder cannot record an out by using the colored base. NCAA pdf’s, the rule, the on line clinic, video bulletins, you name it. There’s a ton of things all NCAA officials have access to, and they should have read/ viewed them all. There really should be no doubt in any NCAA umpire’s mind on this.

RefQuest, Arbiter for summer stuff, Zebra Web for high school. Zebra Web is by far the worst. Last year for high school. Back to Arbiter for our HS games in '26.
-
The throw pulling F3 into foul ground doesn't give him the right to use the colored base. It gives the runner the right to use either
-
Easiest way to score earned/unearned is to reconstruct the inning without the errors and passed balls. Score errors as outs, and don’t move up runners on PB’s. Once the third out “would” have happened, anything that happens after is unearned.
-
yep. My mistake. Call it when the interference happens. Kill it when the fair foul status is determined.
-
The interference happens the moment F3 touches the ball. That kills the play, so the catch never happens. Runner is out. What we need to determine after the interference is the status of the ball. If F3 touches the ball over fair territory, the runner is out, the batter goes to 1B. If R1 interferes, and the ball falls untouched and rolls foul, or if F3 first touches it over foul territory, R1 is out, batter returns to bat with a foul ball added to the count.

Unfortunately, I know how our meetings usually run. From what I can gather, during the meeting with the state and the rules interpreters of the state's different chapters, the state didn't have any guidance either. (If it was brought up and actually discussed, I have no idea) state hasn't had much to say either.
-
Unfortunately I have nothing to report. The topic never came up.
-
Season starts in a few weeks. I expect a RLV ejection by April 2nd.
-
@Biscuit Put your mask with TW pads on the floor of you car under the heater vent on your drive to the game. They'll be soft and ready to go first pitch even on 30 degree days.
-
I laughed. Great line. Though I have a little issue with yahoo’s ignorant “newfound accountability “ statement.
-
Also, BR can use white If there's no play on the BR going into 1B, he can touch either first time by. Only white on any return to the bag
-
Don't let Manfred see this.
-
The rule has already been amended heavily with new interps and guidance. The BR can use the white base if the throw pulls F3 foul, or to avoid a collision.
