Yep - they're all entitled to everything. They get coddled from birth on and do not get punished when they do something wrong (thank you Dr. Spock). Walking out back to cut a switch that would soon be across your backside is a wonderful attitude adjuster. That only happened to me if I acted up at my grandparents house. At home, there were always wooden spoons in the utensil drawer for mom to adjust our attitudes, and dad, well, he has always worn a belt to keep his britches up. Now, thanks to "new age" thinking, if you spank your kid, they can call child protective services and get you charged with child abuse!!!!! Funny how corporal punishment, something that has been used by parents for thousands of years, and has worked for thousands of years, is now "wrong". While at the same time, we now have kids shooting up schools and being disrespectful to everybody. Yet, somehow, the "experts" fail to see the direct correlation between the two. Think about this... the farther back in time you look, the more access kids had to guns, while at the same time, corporal punishment was the norm and there weren't any "Columbines". Kids called adults "Mr, Mrs, Miss, Sir or Ma'am, and dropping an F-bomb in the presence of an adult was something that rarely ever happened (soap in the mouth anyone?) Is it just me, or is it blatantly obvious to others, that the new "hands-off" parenting philosophy caused many more problems than it has solved?

Good thing you added that "JK"!!!! You might have started a riot! There are morons in every avocation. The morons that have chosen umpiring usually don't end up lasting very long. It doesn't take long for word to get back to assignors, and they find themselves getting far fewer games and the ones they do get are generally lower quality games. Many eventually give it up. Coaches, on the other hand, can be morons for years and years without consequence as long as they win ball games.

NO, I'm not granting time for the defense to throw the ball back to F1. Like others said, they ask and I will ask them why they need time. If it's to tie their shoe, or if a runner has just slid into a base and has managed to get himself all discombobulated, then I may call time, but in general, if there is not a "good" reason for it, I'm not calling it.

I have nothing, R3 out on the force. R3 didn't load up on F2 and since F2 wasn't waiting to make a tag and only partially blocking the plate, the "slide or attempt to go around" rule doesn't apply. Looked like incidental contact.

LL Minors uses a 5 run rule, but allows the local leagues the option of suspending the limit for the last inning - most leagues take this option.

At $22 for a can that makes 2.5 gallons, seems a bit pricey for my tastes. Even Gatorade/Powerade are a bit pricey for me (but I end up buying them on occasion). I found a recipe for sports drink that has the same carbs, and electrolytes as Gatorade, and costs very little to make. 2 liters water (I tried this recipe with 2 quarts, comes out a bit salty tasting) 1/2 tsp sea salt 1/2 tsp Morton Lite salt (provides the potassium) 1/2 cup sugar 1 packet unsweetened KoolAid (Lemonade, Limeade, and orange are my flavors of choice) For lower carbs, I substitute the half cup of sugar with 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup Splenda.

If the complex won't let you dump unruly coaches, it's time to dump the complex. If you're in an association, I'd bring it up that the association should not take any more games at this complex. See how much profit they make when they can't host any games because they can't get any umpires.

Calling only LL games, I find this particularly true. If I don't yell TIME!, chances are, F2 will get in his squat and F1 will be pitching - even with me in the way!!!!!

So just to clarify... TNCoach found a website that mentions a "non-appeal" 4th out. By any of the rule sets I've read or seen discussed, or heard interpretations on - no such animal exists. Think of it like this: Once the 3rd out is recorded, the half inning is over. Since the half-inning is over, the only way to get that 4th out, is with an appeal.

Depends on the rule set... some require the runner to enter DBT before they can be called on abandonment, others simply require that the runner abandon any attempt to run the bases.

I'd lean toward train wreck. BR and F2 are where they are supposed to be, doing what they are supposed to be doing. In the OP, it is not a batted ball, but a ball 4 in the dirt that rebounds off F2.

You should do a roll-call before the game to insure that the names match the numbers on the lineup card! Be sure each and every one of them has a government issued photo ID... PU: Jimmy Smith! #6: Here! PU: Let's see that ID... OK ... Billy Green! #17: Here! PU: Let's see that ID... OK ... Bobby Johnson! #4: Here! PU: Wait a minute, the lineup card says you should be #8. Coach... What is #8's name? Coach: John Doe PU: Lineup says that John Doe is #19, so what is number #19's name? ... and who is on first?

I would walk down to 1B and ask #14: "Son, what's your name?". If he got the right name, then I'd go ahead and make the correction to the numbers shown on my card and play on.

About the third out before BR reaches 1B, that applies when that 3rd out is at 1B (BR get's put out before reaching 1B) R2 tagged at 3B is not a force I have a timing play - run scores.

If R3 touched HP during the play, then the run would score. Since hindsight tells you R3 left after F1 touched the ball - that solidifies not putting R3 back on 3B.

Best I have in the batter's favor would be a foul ball - that assuming it hit the bat then the batter's hand. Strictly based on OP, I have strike three since it hit him while swinging.

Definitely a HTBT, but if R3 came home and scored, and the play at 3B was actually an attempt to keep R1 at 2B, R3' s run scores, leaving R1 at 2B and BR on 1B. As to R3 running on a no-out infield pop-up, I'd have to guess poor coaching.

Pure foolishness - yet again, "local rules are written by fools" applies. That being said... There is one positive comment that I have with regard to the OP... At least the league actually provided a copy of the local rules to an umpire!!!!! Most times, all these screw-up local rules are shared with coaches, but not the umpires and at some point during a game, something comes up that calls on one of these fuster-cluck rules, and that is the point where the coaches make it known to the umpire that the rule exists.

Rich, this is quite the month!!!! Yet again, I am in full agreement with you. I coached for 15 years, and NEVER once even gave any thought to anything going on outside the fence unless someone did something and another coach or umpire brought it to my attention. When I umpire, my focus is on the field, when I was coaching, my focus was on the field, and the dugout (keep the kids from horseplay) and the lineup and who is where on the field and have I subbed in everybody to get their MPR and what is the pitch count and how many balls, strikes, outs on the batter, and on and on. As a manager, there are too many important things going on to allow yourself to be distracted by people outside the fence. If I were paying attention to the fans, I wouldn't be doing my job as a manager. You will always have PIA parents, and if they become a problem, then me as a coach will suggest to the umpire that he place both teams on the bench until the offender leaves. As an umpire, I won't wait until someone suggests that is what I do, I just do it. There is no need to EJ a coach or anyone for that matter. The rules provide the solution and that is to stop play. Easy-peasy. As a coach and as an umpire - the fans DO NOT EXIST.
