I had a similar play in one of my early JV games this season. I think this is one of those touchy situations where there's a lot of room for honest disagreement, and it's an obvious HTBT, but I ruled the same as you. I'm curious, why did you get with the BU on this play? Just because of the hubbub from the coach? I can see getting with my partner if requested, just to try and calm the coach down and present a united front, but I honestly wouldn't go to him in this situation for any real input.

Unless I'm protecting another fielder to field the ball, I think I'm getting interference on this one. Just because he stopped, he's still in the act of fielding, as evidenced by the fact he actually fielded the ball and made a play. I also don't think this is a possible train-wreck scenario - it's gotta be one or the other.

I find the only time this really happens is in lower level games when I've got catchers who are hopping late. Usually I can adjust within a few pitches if they're consistently moving back or whatever, but like 24 said, to me, it's just part of the gig...

Exactly. I'm not sure why the Case Play doesn't just respond that way. I see nothing that could be appealed. I think an analogous example would be a runner returning after an uncaught foul ball. Just because he's already touched the following base, doesn't mean he can't return.

I find it almost impossible to come out of these games feeling good about myself. I've about come to the realization that it's impossible to do a good job on these games because you've got to steal strikes wherever you can which, at least for me, leads to inconsistency. And then the constant whining of the parents and coaches just irritates the crap out of me.

While researching appeals in FED because of the BOO thread that NovaScotia posted, I ran across this case play. Say what? Are they saying you can or can't call the B1 out? I certainly don't see how you could, but I cannot understand the ruling at all.

That only matters in FED, and in this case, I think the play was initiated by the Offense, so the Defense could still appeal - in FED only.

I'm with you. EDIT: Doesn't F4's statement that Charles batted out of order constitute an appeal? I don't see why it wouldn't. The rule (6.07(b )) says "the defensive team appeals", so I think you'd have an out on Baker, Able back to third and Charles at bat.

I ordered a set each of their navy and black ball bags when they had them on sale for, I think, $2.95 a pair. I figured it couldn't hurt to have a bag up to my UA bags. I think I'd go with one ball bag over using those things - especially the royal blue ones...

MiLB is no tobacco period, for umpires or players. They can't even have it in the locker room. MLB is open for any. The MLB players can even have tobacco when they're down in the minors.

They don't pay for LL umpires? $35 to 45 here for Majors--one man. When I started it was $ 15 for Minors and $18 for Majors, so it really hasn't gone up much in 26 years. Here, only districts that have their own volunteer LL umpires get free umpire service, and that's fairly rare. Our district at least is all volunteer. Most of the leagues make the coaches do most of the games, but there are some umpires that umpire the games. I haven't done many this year - I did a lot more the last couple.

That's the strange thing. I've never gotten involved in the eligibility of a pitcher, I just record how many innings he's pitched. I don't know how a challenge to his eligibility is supposed to happen - I'd kick it to the TD.

UKCE, From reading the case I read that F2 must have been laying on the ground there for legal to jump. But if he is not laying on the ground and has his arm stretched out and the runner hurdles or jumps he is out. Nowhere in the case play does it say that F2 is laying on the ground. In fact, it does say that they "both lose their balance and tumble to the ground", which would indicate to me that he was not previously on the ground. Given this case play, I think you'd have a hard time getting an out for jumping, hurdling or leaping over an outstretched arm.

The only stuff I sign is U-trip score cards. I think it's primarily for the pitching records since there are pitching restrictions and we're the "impartial party". I'm not a big fan, but I've had no problems so far - knock on wood...

My son's last LL Minor's game ended Friday night after the fifth inning due to a City time limit. They were down 7-3, primarily due to three boneheaded plays on defense and 3-4 boneheaded baserunning plays. Of course, our whiny coach and all the parents were busy talking about the greater conspiracy from the league. My son was upset about the loss and started talking about how unfair it all was and I absolutely laid in to him. I said, "you scored three runs - you need at least 5 more. You had three kids thrown out on the bases because they did stupid things. You gave up two runs because your third basemen threw the ball into the third base dugout when the obvious play was at first. You gave up another run when you [he was catching] threw the ball to first trying to pick off a runner with the bases loaded. And you're going to blame this on the umpires and the league? I don't think so..." It just really aggravates me when coaches and parents try to blame stuff on the umpires or league, instead of teaching their kids that sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and you've got to deal and move on.

Almost everything I've done here - Middle School, JV, Varsity, Travel and most LL - is two man. The only one man I've done is LL stuff, which is unpaid so scheduling guys is tough.

Some of the guys I work with have the TOC brown. Doesn't look as bad as you'd think. If I was going to add colors, I'd get some of the imitation MLB shirts - a couple of them don't look that bad.

I'm not going to argue with the coaches over whether it's at the letters or at his head. When he makes that comment, if I feel it deserves a response (which it probably did here, it may not always), I'm going to give him a stop sign and say "That's enough!" That's his warning. Anything after that and he's gone. As for not dumping him, an EJ is not an admission of failure. This guy apparently keeps doing this stuff - because he knows he can get away with it. If he gets dumped, he might reconsider. Either way, he needs to learn there's a line and it needs to be enforced.

Wait, he called the out without an appeal?

I had a very similar thing happen a couple weeks ago. When I snapped that it hit me, not the bat, the coach just said smugly, "I knew it hit something"...

Mike, it depends on what your standard is. Some manufacturers have a different color for the Polo Blue (Blue w/ Black Collar) versus the Powder Blue (Blue w/ Navy and White Collar); some have the same. I think the darker blue on the Polo Blue (like Honig's) looks better.

The ball's dead on the home run - no violation. Also, you say you "mentioned it to the coach". Did you warn him - and record that warning? In my mind, there's a difference between "mentioning" something and actually warning someone. And without a written record of that warning, you're going to be screwed. Obviously, calling an out on this play is grabbing the very dirty end of the stick and you would - justifiably - have an absolute firestorm on your hands. And if you don't havve a written record of that warning, you're not going to have a leg to stand on.
